Strawberry colored power steering fluid

Hello all,

Yesterday I rebuilt my power steering pump (thanks to Techno Duck for the advice and telephone assistance).

The rebuild went well and quite smoothly. After I got everything together and started up the system of course sucked down most of the P/S fluid in the reservoir, however I expected this and added more as needed.

Because of all the turbulence and air in the system the P/S fluid had turned pink from the air bubbles mixed in. I bled the system and everything is working properly, but 24 hours later the P/S fluid still appears frothy and the steering sounds like there is still a little air in there.

Should I wait another day or two until all of those little bubbles settle down and re-bleed, or is there something I should do in the meantime?

Thanks,

GHEN

Just to be certain,
You did just use cheap, standard ATF (automatic transmission) fluid---with NO leak stop additives?

OK,

The rebuild kit may not have included proper bleeding procedure:

Did you upgrade the short hose to the PS reservoir and the fitting?

Air bubbles may get in at the reservoir by the clamps. If the hose is old, cut off only 1/4"---a quarter of an inch--not longer and put the clamps on a new area.

Did the kit come with new copper crush washers for the hose fittings? This could cause air as well.

The cheapest aftermarket is $1.12 for a pack of 4.

I upgraded to the short hose but did not use that fitting, honestly I thought it wasn't needed for mine since the new, shorter hose fit onto my reservoir and pump fine.

Where does this fitting go?

Thanks John, looks like I overlooked this.

GHEN,

The new fitting is straight off the PS pump. How you made the short hose work without a kink I do not know.

Compare to a picture of the old OEM hose fitting:

I'm just finishing up doing a bunch of things (had gasket, oil cooler seals, p/s pump seals) and bought the new hose from the reservoir to the pump and the recommended fitting. Maybe I'm missing something but the fitting on my pump is much larger than the replacement, in fact the replacement actually fits the fitting that goes from the pump to the rack. The old banjo fitting is about 16 mm while the replacement is about 10mm. Any thoughts? The fittings are still on the old hoses so I know they're not mixed up.

mikez944,

The old banjo fitting is 16mm-I just checked my old fitting.

I replaced/upgraded 2 hoses/fittings and the fittings were perfect for my PS pump.

I have no explanation.

Is it the right fitting?
Is it the right hole?
You might want to call Travis at Rennbay for a pros opinion.

Thanks John, I should recheck the part number on the fitting maybe it isn't the right one. Any downside to using the old banjo fitting?

I got it, had the wrong part, found the right one. It's not showing a crush washer, does it need one?

Strawberry color is good...blood red is better. You should be using ATF.
