Oil leak
After purchasing my '83 a few weeks ago, I've finally had time to get her running (albeit rough - I have another thread for that). Now that it is, I've discovered a fairly significant oil leak that I have yet to be able to pinpoint. Only occours when running, and appears to be coming from the rear of the engine closest to the passenger side. Any ideas if this is a common leak area? What to look for first? Haven't had a chance yet to crawl under the car to see if I can determine where the leak is originating from.

![]() Number 9 on this pic often goes bad and is really easy to replace. It's right over the rear cam bearing, wich is supplied with oil pressure, so that would make a pretty good leak if the gasket is bad. Number 3 could be bad as well. A bit more difficult to replace, but not bad. It could also be the RMS or the balance shaft housing/rear housing plug O-ring as mentioned.

Rear cam gasket is the most common culprit. It drips right onto the exhaust manifold and you will eventually see some smoke. It's easiest to remove the cam to change the gasket. This way you can change the cam tower gasket at the same time. It's a pretty easy job and the gaskets are cheap.
My whole car leaked oil from everywhere when I got it. The rear cam tower gasket was the most annoying one.

this is a pretty significant leak. I looked at the rear cam gasket and it looked ok. A little damp, but not like the drip I'm seeing. In the course of running for 10 minutes, the oil puddle was 4-5 inches in diameter. That concerns me. I suspect head gasket or maybe rear main? Either would probably suck a lot worse to replace than the cam gasket, eh?

Look at the REAR balance shaft/compensating shaft on the passenger side. It is below the exhaust manifold above the oil pan. The rear seal may be bad. If this is bad you will see a wide area of black oil/grease from years of dripping. A temporary solution is to clean the area and get silicone and gob it on/in for a while. No fast fix otherwise.
The RMS will leak straight down when the car sits and you can see the trail of oil on the rear oil pan. GL John_AZ 1988 924S + 1987 924S |
