radiator fan

hi Im a total newbie. First off Im 16 years old and picked up a 1985 porsche 944 from a local auction. My dad drove it home and it kept over heating. we fixed the leaks in the radiator hoses but now we need to get the fan working.

anyway the radiator fan/motor is fine but the housing that surrounds it is broken and unusable. Is there anyone that knows where I can get one?

I want to start with this because the engine overheats easily and I want to be able to drive it!!!

sorry if this is a dumb question but Im a total newbie. any help is appreciated!!

there should be two fans that sit in a shroud and fuses control each fan, depending on the year and there were 2 versions in '85.

i imagine someone will offer up fans or fans/shroud, hopefully close to you.

http://www.clarks-garage.com/ will give you a lot of info about the car.
select garage/shop manual in the upper left corner.

welcome.

good luck.

Hi Rjackle, Welcome to the Do It Yourself Porsche World. The very FIRST thing you need to do is change out the Cam and Balance Belts and All Rollers. Since you bought the car at an Auction, you don't know when they were changed last. We normally change the belts every 30K miles. If the Cam Belt breaks you will end up with bent valves at the least. Believe me it is much cheaper to change out the belts. Don't drive the car until they are changed. It is good that you are starting young. Your father needs to join EBAY and look for Porsche 944 parts. I have gotten some great deals on used parts from there. You need to research clarks-garage. com, go down to Home Page and click, next page top left 2nd down and click, that will bring you to a page A - Z. Example: click on "E" and it will bring up Engine, etc. Read through the entire thing and you will be able to gain knowledge about how to repair your car and what to look for. Never buy a used water pump. Read the Tech Info on here it is located at the top of page after you click on the Porsche car.

Cheers,
Larry

If you need used parts and shop carefully there is also eBay (evilbay). Go to eBay + eBay Motors and search for Porsche 944 (Maybe 2 or 3 thousand parts). Careful though as I have been sold junk from there, but along with that also many new parts cheap. Then of course here at Pelican one can get what one needs at reasonable OEM prices - good folks also.

Have pfunn with the new to you car.

John (TNT25169 here on Pelican) at http://apartabove.com/index.php?option=com_contact&view=contact&id=1&Itemid=53 is great to deal with, as well as porwanabe here on the forums. Both part out cars and probably have a good used one for a good deal. Send them a PM.

You can also look in the classifieds for people parting out cars and just contact about wanting one. They're not hard to find.

I decided to take out the fan, since it was hanging there by 1 screw, (hmmm.... wonder why the shroud is broke? ) and i noticed it wasn't the original porsche fan. in fact, its a nissan fan...?

The original owner must not have been very "mechanically intelligent" because this car has some weird stuff done to it....

It doesn't seem like it...it is!

Why are PO's so stupid? Does that mean that If I ever wanted to sell my car, I would suddenly and uncontrollably transform into a really stupid person in order to not disturb the balance of forces in the universe???

At least wire it to the original harness so it works correctly.

To HondaDustR: Sorry to completely get off topic but how much of a performance gain did you get adding the chip to your 944?? And what part of VA are you from??

I never had the car dyno'ed, but I know it's supposed to gain ~10-15 ft.lb. in the 2000-3000 rpm range, and ~3-4 hp at the peak. The WOT feels a bit stronger, but the real gains are in the part throttle maps...totally night and day. I found out the chip is tuned optimally for no cat, which is why I got alot of smoke at WOT in the high revs, but it's supposed to be a couple hp better without the cat. It can be run with a cat, too. Just set the Fuel Quality Switch to position 2 clockwise from fully counterclockwise to set the fuel delivery 3% leaner. I found out all of this just recently, so I havent been able to try anything yet since my motor is still in pieces. I do have a second Y-pipe to make a test pipe, so I will be trying it with no cat soon. I highly recomend the chip, and Russel Berry is really helpful if you have any problems or questions about them (he's the one that tuned them). If you have 93 octane gas in your area and the car's in good tune, get the R version, which has an even more agressive WOT map. I have the 91 octane chip, mostly 'cause I didn't know 93, which is what I run all the time, was within spec for the R tuning. Lindsey Racing said it was tuned for race fuel, but Russel says it works fine on 93.
I'm up in Fairfax Co. in the Mount Vernon area, about an hour or so north from Spotsylvania.

Tks for the info. It sounds like you have a pretty good knowledge of the chips! I'll look into purchasing one. And I used to work for Fairfax County Police. I did a lot of work in the MT vernon area.
