oil change
Hello All:
Changed oil in the 944 yesterday. After some searching I picked Royal Purple 5w30. Seems to be quieter but could be my imagination. I will say my warm idle is a fraction higher. I did see some suggestion of adding a quart of royal break in oil. Any comments?

hey dave, i'd run the brad penn in it. There sell it down here where I work. it has the zddp additive in it for the older engines, and its a partial synthetic. I run the 20w-50 in my 951 and 10w-30 in my stroker jeep for the cam i'm running. royal purple should be alright as it does contain some zddp in it, i think. lemme know if you want a case, its about $50 for 12 quarts, and I can get you some malhe filters for $6 a piece.

+1000 on Brad Penn. Good Stuff, and very reasonably priced. Yes, it's only part synthetic, but both the synthetic and non-synthetic components are of the highest quality...see it as the best of both worlds, plus the old API SJ concentration of ZDDP will make your cam and lifters last much longer. Royal Purple is good stuff, as well, but I think it is SM graded...less ZDDP to protect the valvetrain.
5W-30 is only suitable for winter temps in these cars. You should run at least 10W-40. 20W-50 is better if you drive hard, have a hot summer climate, and/or routinely get stuck in traffic on a really hot day. 20W-50 is too thick for winter (ask me how I know). 0W-40 is an excellent all season weight, if you can find it in something other than Mobil1 API SM graded bottles.

yup - Brad Penn 20w-50 here as well. Best stuff I've ever put in...nice to have the peace of mind as well. My oil pressure is great, no leaks and my car 'drinks' much less oil now. Love it.

I just got a new long block and had all the seals replaced. The shop put in 5w-30 for a few hundred mile break in period. I however had a DE the day after I got it. Even taking it fairly easy the 5w-30 oil was just evaporating in the system! I opened the fill lid and it just steamed out! Ended up using a whole quart of oil for one event (usually use at most a 1/4 quart if any). You should run at least 10w-40 (synthetic will also handle more heat without breaking down). You may want 20w-50 if its a warm time of the year and you are driving hard (autocross or track), just give your car a few minutes to warm up the thicker oil before street driving.

Royal Purple is great in 944s. Brad Penn is too, although the extra zinc and other additives aren't really necessary. A lot of early 911 guys swear by it because the metallurgy of those engines really does need those additives. Your choice I guess. I've used Royal Purple, Mobil-1 and Amsoil in my 944 (and my 951 when I had it). No problems with any of them. All give good pressure and excellent lubrication.
