pricing opinions? 90 S2 cab with paint issues
I'm looking at a 1990 S2 cab.
The good: Low miles (69k), runs great, tracks straight, top is in nice condition. The bad: Allegedly had major belt and water pump service recently, but has no service records. Biggest issue is the paint; the owner had it repainted in black, a pretty mediocre paint job. It has clear coat issues and is not uniformly glossy, and areas like the door jambs are just plain dull. Before that, it was apparently repainted linen from its original gold by a previous owner. Carfax is clean, but no explanation available for the first repaint. An interesting mix of good and bad. Thoughts on pricing? |

A good condition S2 with that mileage runs anywheres from 10-14k.
This one... I wouldn't go more than $5k, since it will need at least a $5k paint job.

carfax does not meen that much . we repair alot of car that never get reported to carfax . one of the cars i have was clipped and if you check carfax its clean . if you don't know what a clipped car is .its when you take a car cut it in half then take the half from an other car and weld them back together to make one good car . you may need to refinish the jams on the car ? it sounds like they were not masked off when the car was painted ? thats what you get with a cheap paint job . schumi stated that he would not go more that 5k thats about right i would not go much higher than that top out at 7k . as for getting a repaint for 5k it seams to me that thats what it got now for a paint job . for us to refinish a car with no body work and just R&I's (remove and install ) all molding ,door handles and so on your looking about 7 to 8grand .

Anyone who spends $5,000 on a paint job needs their head examined.
You can do all your own prep work, buy the paint (your choice) and take it to have someone shoot it for well under $1,000. I've posted elsewhere examples of guys that have done STUNNING repaints on cars for under $500 out-of-pocket. That said, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Have the car checked out and if you like it, buy it. 944s aren't "collector" cars. They're meant to be enjoyed and driven. Expect that you're going to have to do work to it, pretty regularly and routinely. Porsches in general are not cars that you buy and only put gas into for the next 10 years. They need care, attention, upkeep, etc. Therefore a lack of service records isn't something I'd worry too much about. Yes, records are always nice (and worth paying more for) but I wouldn't sweat it. If you REALLY care about value, get it and strip the whole thing down to metal and repaint it in the original color. Sounds like a heck of a lot of work though. Bottom line is don't get hung up on "book value" or what someone else thinks your car is worth. Enjoy it, drive it and do what you want with it to the extent it makes YOU happy. At the end of the day, all cars' "book values" are virtually nothing anyway, so don't obsess over it.

lol - then i guess i'm definitely nuts - i spent $8k on mine - took every panel off the car, stripped it down to the factory prep - completely took care of every flaw - reshot it - cleared it - put it back on the car - cleared it again - color sanded it - show perfect
now, after about 5 years, i'm getting ready to do it all over again, as there are a few chips in the paint that being said, you can get a decent job at maaco for about a grand, but it is all about the prep, and if you don't inspect it before they paint it, they will likely skip areas that needed attention |

I was thinking this one would be worth $6-7k, which I doubt the owner will let it go for; he is probably upside down in the car. Might give him an offer of $7250 tops. |

Can't believe it's been painted twice with only 69M miles?
