944 cup holder - how to

Ya Ya Ya before you say it, its a drivers car, who needs a cup holder?

Well one of this years projects includes making the 944 more "livable" and includes items like a new head unit to plug my ipod into, a bazooka subwoofer for better sound, new seats, a slight tint job to cut down on interior temps and yes even a cup holder.

The stereo is in and sounds great so on to the next item;

I installed a cup holder like this in an old BMW I had so I grabbed another when I saw one for a few bucks in a store. You can also get them on ebay for about $5. Its the type that folds away when not in use if you arent familiar with them.

Unlike the BMW I didnt want to drill holes in to the car so I made a small bracket.

The bracket is made of aluminum and more specifically some house AC ducting that I had lying around. I taped the sides so it doesnt damage the carpet or console, I also taped above where the cup holder is fastened so the bare aluminum doesnt show when its installed. The bracket slips under the tunnel and is secured by an existing screw that holds the console in place.

I test installed it on the drivers side because the passengers side was against the wall and I still need to get some short nuts and bolts to hold the cup holder to the bracket.

So theres my cup holder, 30 minutes and about $6.

My cup holder has two hands, but tends to get annoyed when the liquid vibrates out of the cup. :-)I guess i never was much of a coffee drinker so the absence of a CH never bothered me.

It's going to be installed on the passenger side, he 'test fit' on the drivers side due to access issues [garage limits]

I've heard that it's a German cultural thing not to eat or drink in the car, that's why there is no cup holder.
Although, newer German cars have bowed to the Americans money and have included cup holders in their cars.
BTW open the glove box & look at the inside of the door, it's got 2 depressions in it to hold 2 cups (or cans), just not when you are driving

I also don't believe in cup holders, when you are driving, you should be driving! I do have to say this is one of the better cup holder add-ons I have ever seen. I am glad you made a bracket they attaches under the console, nice thinking! I always like to read about DIY projects, whether I would ever consider doing them or not.

I dont really like cup holders either but for me the epiphany moment was when I was taking an on ramp in the winter with my e30 BMW. I was holding the cup in one hand so it wouldnt spill and the back end of the car started to drift out ever so slightly. I held the mild drift through the corner and made it onto the highway but at that point I decided to install a cup holder.

I have driven 10,000 miles this year in my work car and I would like to use my 944 more so adding a cup holder is a "necessity" Some may scoff but I know I will drive with a coffee in the early morning so I would rather be a little safer and use the cup holder. Removal requires a turn of a screw so no damage done.

I've found a solution that satisfies the contemporary need for a cupholder and the old-school distain for modern solutions.... a roll of racing tape on the floor of the passenger side. Perfect dimensions for nearly all cups and handy for affixing loose body parts after track incidents.

Here's mine. I bought the cup holders from Schucks, for maybe $9.99 (leather covered!).

The NA, I screwed it onto the console on the passenger side; for the 951, I attached it to the center vent.

To get it onto the vent, I removed the vent then mounted it with toggle bolts (like for drywall) because I felt the vent clips it came with were too flimsey.

If I do the one in my 951 over, I'd put it up just a little higher, next time.

You gotta have a cup-holder!

Nice job Dave!

I have one of those wedgie ones shoved between the passenger seat and console. Its a double one. It works great. Only one I ever tried that didnt boune or shake the drink out of the cup.
I have an hour an 15 min commute I have to have my coffee in the morning!! The cup between the legs dont work to well when you have to use the clutch. Crushed way too many cup that way. Plus its tough to explain the wet spot in my crotch.

i have the one from 9Xauto, which is essentially already made like the one dave did above - no drilling or fabricating or anything to do though - remove the one screw on the side of the console, just like in the pic above, reinstall through hole in cupholder - done

lol - i did paint their bracket black before installation though
