speed/ refernce sensor gapping

I was wondering if the speed sensor (front one closest to engine) has to be gapped a certain width? I know the reference sensor has to be .8mm gap. I have the tool to make the .8mm gap, but was wondering if the front sensor can be .1- 1 mm gap? I cant get the right gapping (or spaceing) for the rear refernce sensor. I am thinking about sanding some of the bracket just a tad to get the sensor further into the bellhouseing.
