944 NA to TURBO swap all!!!

i know, this is an old idea but:
i have a nice 86'944 NA and a crashed but mechanical perfect 88'944 turbo(salvage).

So i want to put out engine/torqu tube/rear axle/tranny/exaust/suspension all tougheter and than change it with turbo one.
I think in porsche they call this wedding.
If i put all togheter out with some minor electric change(DME wiring, water pump...) it's like not a big issue if you have all the material from the other car.
Unplug all conections(front/rear cross,arms,wiring...) rise the car and...out!

please teel me if i forget something, if i start this job i must finisch it in a 10/15 days(the porsche is my second car)

Thank you for any kind of help

2 weeks for a whole transplant...it could be done if u really focus.

there was a picture of one owner who disconnected all the drivetrain and suspension from the unibody mounting points and lifted the entire body off. left the engine trans and suspension all connected to each other.

I'm sure working non stop you could do it in 2wks...... I wouldn't want to try though.... I'd want to change the clutch and lots of stuff while I had it that far apart too....

Don't forget to use the Turbo DME and KLR and all of the Turbo wiring if it is good to re-use. New Vacuum lines would be best and follow the Turbo Vacuum lines not the NA's...

I may be better to sell the NA and find turbo roller. Unless you are attched to the NA, I know I would have to make a tough decision.

Either way, a great project.

porsche4life 01-27-2010 02:22 PM

I'd go ahead and do the belts and rollers while I had it out....

It is also going to be a bear to shoe-horn the Intercooler into the front of the car, under the nose plate/panel (Intercooler Doesn't quite fit an NA). It has been done but requires cutting the front brace of the uni-body running across the mid-front. Do a search here, or maybe others can chime in as how to do it...

I have one (an '88 Turbo in an '86 NA shell) but I didn't do the transplant. I bought it from the guy who did, and he took a year to do it a little at a time in his garage.

thank you guys,i forgot the intercooler...but i can fix something

do someone have some photos of a body or part in this condition?
I'm not shure with the rear cross...
I put out/in engine, transaxle, clutch jobs but never the rear arms

try to sell an NA and find a TURBO?Impossible in Croatia!(small country in europ).
There are maybe 20/30 NA in all the country,2/3 Turbo, maybe the same with S2.
In the country you can find some crashed or selvage car,but you must hurry because it sold in a few days!

Ok then what you are talking sounds like the right move... But you really need to budget more time to do it right....

may need fuel pump, too. 2 weeks seems short time, especially with wiring. There was a copy of PET showing parts floating around few years ago. This would be a big help.

Don't forget the Brakes/spindals/struts are different. Need to stop that bigger engine. Especially if driven hard.

Cocacolakidd 01-29-2010 06:09 PM

If you do not already have them get a set of the Work Shop Manuals and the PET Manual (Parts and locations of parts plus all of their numbers manual) - I could not live without them...If your budget is tight the Work Shop Manuals and the Pet Manual can be found on line in CD format. I have both and find that the hard copys are much easier to use (for me).
