drilling the trim on a 924 for a spoiler???

Can I drill the trim for a spoiler on a 1982 924?
I have heard yes and no...Do the mtg bolts go thru the trim AND glass?? or just the trim? If thru the glass can I drill with a diamond drill? Any other mounting methods, glue, etc?
Thanks

Last summer I installed a spoiler on my son's 82/924. It came off a 80 parts car that we aquired and the job was complicated by the fact that the mounting studs had all rusted away. On the sides I used 10/24 stainless machine screws and drilled right thru the rubber and thru the aluminum frame of the hatch and pulled everything together with a nut on the bottom side and then cut away the excess bolt to avoid inteference. Although you can see the bolt heads along the spoiler it doesn't look bad. The rear section was attached with many, many short ss self tapping screws fastened up into the rubber of the spoiler (the frame was drilled for these too). There is enough meat in the metal frame of the hatch to allow drilling for all the fastenings. Take your time and make sure you line everything up properly. Run your drill very slowly and stop if it sounds or feels like you are hitting the glass. I suspect the glass will break with a good whack from the drill bit so be careful.
In addition to the fastenings I set the spoiler in clear silicone to help it stay in place. So far no problems........
Hope this helps. Good luck.

you could prolly paint the bolts as well, they would be less noticeable then.

I know where there is a 924S hatch and spoiler

If you are interested I know where there is a hatch for 924S for approx $165 plus ship. Or you could pick it up if you are in Mass, NH area.
Let me know if you are interested. By the way do not drill the glass.. it will shatter.

I installed a 944 wing on my sons '78 924 as follows:

- drill the holes for the tail further back on the hatch, behind where the glass ends (about 1/4 inch further than normal).

- used a dremel saw to cut 3 slits in the side pieces (on the back side, about 2/3rds of the way thru) at the bend. this will allow you to mount them in the correct position (from the top of the hatch) but allow you to 'stretch' it to meet the tail.

Looks as good as the factory install on my 944.
