Oil in airbox
Hi all,
Just a query. I got a '78 924. The other day I was checking the air filter and there was a fair bit of congealed oil along the bottom. Is this any cause for concern? My car does use a little more oil than normal. Ta Jae

When I performed my first tune up on my 83 944, I too noticed quite a bit of "clean" oil in my air box. The car still had the OEM air filter installed. Well, I cleaned out all the oil and replaced the filter with a K& N. My car does not burn any oil. To this day, I am confused as to why there was oil in the air box.

creepy...I had about 1/4 cup of clean looking oil in mine when I got it. I had decided that someone was changing the air filter and oil at the same time but now you guys have got me worried

Completely normal, as long as power and tailpipe emmissions are in spec.

Had the oil in airbox syndrom as described when I first purchased my 84' 944. It turned out that I had a bad brake booster and various other vacuum leaks that was pulling the oil out of the intake. Fixed the vacuum leaks and no more problems.

Lat time I changed my oil in my NA 944, I then changed my air filter a couple days later and had a couple onces totally clean oil in the bottom of my air box. I have been confused too. Never noticed it before but car has no problems runs great. It was right after the oil change!

The 924 was designed to use 1 quart of oil every 800 miles by Porsche. Your only concern would be if you bar pressure falls below 2 when at idle, then you need to check your compression.

1 qt of oil every 800?? mi. that's a lot. Do you know the reasoning behind that?

the Porsche 924 engine was designed to consume oil. So was the 911, 914, 928, etc. ever driven behind a Fiat/Ferrari, or an older jaguar? they shot clouds of oil smoke everywhere!
here's a quick explanation: http://www.synthashield.net/vault/consumpt.html "Oil consumption is a phenomenon unique to internal combustion engines and consists of many separate mechanisms. Because internal combustion engines are fueled primarily by burning of hydrocarbons (lubricants are flammable hydrocarbons), it is only natural that some of the lubricating oil is also burned in the combustion process. Engine design, quality of construction, materials used, types and frequency of use, maintenance, fuel and lubricant used, all can affect the lubricating oil consumption. Although each of these variables may have only very minor effect on oil consumption, their cumulative effect determines the total oil consumption of a particular engine. Car owners often ask about what is "normal" oil consumption. Just as there is no answer to what is "normal" fuel consumption for all cars, there is no such thing as "normal " oil consumption for all engines. Different automobiles can vary widely in fuel consumption from a few miles per gallon to well over 50 MPG. Similarly there is wide variance in how much oil that an engine consumes. A highly stressed racing engine can consume a quart of oil in less than 100 miles, while th engine in a small economy car which is driven on the highway under ideal operating conditions can consume less than one quart in 10,000 miles. Therefore, the only important issue is the determination of the normal oil consumption for your particular engine. Any deviation from that level of consumption is considered " abnormal " and merits investigation. Car owners often boast about their car "not using any oil." This is not true, because every internal engine consumes some lubricant. However, if the car is properly maintained and the oil changed very frequently, the amount of oil used between the oil changes may be so small as to go unnoticed." --- oil consumption is nothing to be worried about as long as it's within specs. at this year's Michelin One Lap of America, there was a supercharged Ford Thunderbird I saw that was moving like you'd never believe.... and it consumed 50 QUARTS of oil in one week! Brock Yates himself poured in the 50th quart of oil. high oil consumption is what you get when you pump out over 600Hp from a supercharged engine that usually produces about half that. dragsters and moster trucks also eat oil like it's going out of style. a really long time ago, engines didn't do much consume oil as they leaked it. it was thought that oil leaking around the outside of the engine would lubricate all the parts and prevent rust. this is why you used to see drivers wearing goggles in the really old cars. it's not because of bugs and dirt as much as it is oil that would leak from the engine and get into their eyes. obin
