What "keys" are these?
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1266591452.jpg
They were among the keys that were on the ring that I got with the car, but I don't know what they are for. If I tried to find out by looking in the owner's manual, I don't recall. One of the 2 is shown twice - lying flat, and standing on end, hopefully so the notches in the end would be visible, but they don't appear to be. They are all made of plastic. And no, the long one does not fit into the other piece. Any ideas? |
Kinda looks like the tool used to pull the radio out.
|
+1 on the tool used for extracting the radio, but there should be two of them - that is a strange one. Or is it someone's custom key for an alarm system?
If you do find a different but correct use for the long flat one (Like a strange wheel lock key, etc.) please post - interesting. The 6 sided one is a standard ignition key head. It does not include the replaceable metal key shank there in the picture. There are also lighted versions of that same key head available. |
+1 on the key head - two of the three items are key heads
I'd bet the third flat item probably has the key cut number on the other side for the key shafts that would fit the head for the ign lock or its a part of a latch? |
Just hang on to them. One of these days you may find out what they are for.
Cheers, Larry |
+1 on the two key heads, key blanks will fit right up into them, as far as the other one no clue, I didn't get anything like that when I bought my 944.
|
The key heads like that are either early key heads possibly (cheapos) or the key heads they give for the alarm key or valet key (although usually the valet key head is red.)

Enter, the complete set (that was on the ring):
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1266956273.jpg The 1st one has been identified as an ignition/door/hatch/gas cap key. The 2nd one had been identified as a glove box key. The 3rd one has been identified as a wheel lock key. The others are the 1's in the 1st picture, unknown. I just noticed that the black plastic rectangualar one with the slot in it has the string "Xoooo" stamped into it. If any of those last 3 have anything to do with the radio,I may as well toss them out. The radio is an alpine, and also a booster equalizer, that are attached using strap iron (pipe strapping). I plan on removing them and installing different (better) alpine unit that does not require a booster, so I have room left for the 3 gauges that are going in. But it looks like I have to remove the whole center console to get at the strap iron that is holding the current stuff in there. Edit: There are no alarm keys, the alarm works automatically with the door locks. |
how about if the stamped number is the key code for the dealer to make you a new key?
|
I was thinking of that possibility, but I would like to be sure, one way or the other. I haven't heard from anyone who has anything similar.
|
that's exactly what the stamped # is, now if you just tell us exactly where the car is...
the others have got me stumped |
The number one is of course the ignition key - lighted version.
The two smaller angular one's are just a smaller version of a door key - when the door, hatch and glove compartment key is different than the Ignition Key. Easier to feel the difference in the keys when in the dark to open the door, etc. They will accept a standard 944/Porsche key blank. The smaller head is also often used for the Porsche alarm system outside lock, the lock by the drivers door The rectangular one is of course the key identifier for a Dealer Locksmith. It has been known to be metal or plastic (Most are metal), again stamped with the key code for Ignition or Door. It seems to me that most 944's have two keys, one for ignition and the other is for doors, glove box and hatch. Allot of 944's have been re-keyed for a single key that fits the major locks by it's self. |

is there an echo in here?
|
I still don't know about those small-sized key heads. There is not outside, or inside alarm lock cylinder. As I stated before, the alarm arms itself when the doors are locked via either one of the door locks, or the console rocker switch (or the wireless remote that I installed). And, since the # on the plastic piece has been posted here, I guess I don't need to worry if I loose it - I only need to worry about loosing the car. Maybe I better edit it out.
|
Oops sorry for the ECHO - ECho - Echo- echo
The smaller size key head will also accept a standard alarm key blank - the alarm with the key slot/tumbler outside the drivers door. |
The smaller plastic heads came on my ignition key when I ordered a new OEM ignition cylinder recently. They are quite small, and I took them off, and put on a full size, lighted head.
