Where is cheapest place to buy a case of VR1 grade motor oil?
I recently noticed that I am about 400 miles overdue on my 5K oil change interval. The last time I bought VR1 (at advance), it was 3.89 (+tax) per quart. But it is now 4.89 per quart. At that price, I may as well go synthetic. Does anyone know where it can be had cheaper? I am ready to start buying by the case, or even by the barrel, if the price is nice.

Absolutely! AND I add a pint of lucas oil stabilizer, along with a pint of engine treatment such as teflon or dura lube. I don't like the idea of having internal engine problems, anytime soon. Or at all, preferably. The car is only in "race" mode for a very small fraction of it's operating time, and only for short bursts lasting maybe 2 to 10 seconds at a time. But the stresses on all of the engine parts at that time are equal to what they would be on the track, and your average engine oil just isn't designed to protect it, under those conditions.
If it is a race car (I'm a believer, that it is), then it NEEDS race oil. No one can say they will never step on the pedal, if only for a few fleeting seconds, every once in a while. That's when the quality of the oil is going to matter.

Does AZ or advance sell it (in 20/50 weight)?

No. And to be perfectly honest with you , I have no plans on doing so, anytime soon (or later, even). That happens to be one of those things that a just don't give a damn about. However much is there, I don't really care!

...except that Brad Penn is part synthetic. Not exactlty the same. I get it online and after shopping around for the place that won't soak on shipping it works out to about $6 a quart for a case of 12. Good stuff. Only thing I'd rather run is some grade 5 synthetic from Motul, but that's like $15 a qt.

Big plus for Brad Penn is it's one of the handful of high quality oils that's not API SM rated, SJ IIRC, meaning it's got the high ZDDP additive content the high spring pressure flat tappet valvetrain in the 944 motor needs for long life.
I'm very leary of running anything off the shelf rated SM these days because of this. I used to swear by Mobil1 but not for this car...

I live in Latrobe, PA.....10 minutes from a brad penn dealer! That's all I run in both of my cars and all my dad runs in his 930....Up until the beginning of this year, I was getting the stuff for 3.50/qt.....Since then they have raised the prices twice....But it's still cheap cuz i dont have to pay shipping
![]() EDIT: The dealer is in Greensburg, PA in case you were wondering.

I'll check out Brad's stuff then. Has lot of ZDDP, like VR1. Is the place in york near 83? I pass through there occasionally.

I get mine here for $38 a case. If you try to pick it up online a bottle at a time it's like $4.50 and up.
And yes, .140% ZDDP to be exact. Not sure on the VR1 stuff, but I've been very happy with Penn Oil - have 2 cases in the garage. ![]() http://theoilwarehouse.com/?mainURL=/store/item/2a2ke/Racing_Oil/Brad_Penn_Penn_Grade_1_20w-50_Racing_Oil.html |

Thanks, night heart. I'm headed through york today on my way down to (& back up from) jessup, md & arlington, va. I'll have to see what the GPS says about how far off 83 it is.
