Question Bursch exhaust rattle

I recently installed a Bursch exhaust on my 86 na. I love the sound , but recently I have noticed a slight rattle when it gets fairly warm. I have checked and re-checked for any loose clamps, bolts or heatsheilds, but have found nothing. I think that the muffler itself has a baffle inside causing this noise. Has anyone else had this same problem, or is this characteristic of this
exhaust?

ps : Dont get me wrong , though. This exhaust kicks ass for the money , and sounds just like I wanted - like a race car! I did not want a big ass chrome exhaust with a 5 inch tip. This is a very pure sports car exhaust. Looks like a real exhaust on a purposeful racing car.

that is highly unusual. i never had a rattle from my Bursch exhaust! maybe yours was dropped on the floor by the UPS guys or the muffler shop? also make sure it's not the sound of the exhaust itself resonating, or something by the exhaust resonating.

good luck!

I thought it was odd too. So I called the people I ordered it from, and they said that they have gotten this same complaint from about 5 other customers this year. All on 944's. I thought I would ask you guys. But I can still not say enough about the raw sound. I do not want to have to take this off.

And by the way, the shop that put this on did not drop it. I am a manager at the shop that did it, and made sure all proper care was taken.

no, that's definitely odd. defective batch of mufflers? i can say that i love the sound of my Bursch also. what RPM does the rattle happen at? all RPMS? just a narrow band? you can try this: rev it to the RPM where it rattles, and try to find what is resonating or rattling at that RPM. offhand, the last time that happened to me it was a heatshield that was not touching when the muffler was cold, but it was close enough to rattle when the car was

1) moving
2) at 3000 rpm
3) warm

check it out, and look the whole thing over, and...

good luck!

I have it too! After the car is warm! What the hell is it!? I thought it was the rubbermounts rubbing against the painted muffler mounts, cuz the of surfaces...my theory i guess cuz i put WD40 on them and the squeaking stopped temporarily.

It really only happens at idle after warm. It is not a heatsheild. At work yesterday , we put it up on the lift while running. I told my mechanics where to listen for it, and they could find no other possible areas except for the interior of the muffler. Only audible when warm.

Guess I should just drive it and see if it gets worse. The company I got it from said that they would warranty it, but I would be responsible for the shipping. Not going to go that route unless absolutely necessary. I dont want to have to take it all off again.

Man f*uck that! They SENT you a defective muffler. You shouldn't have to pay for *****. COMPLAIN COMPLAIN COMPLAIN. Talk to a supervisor if you have to. It's their problem, not yours.

Despite the problems i'm still thinking of getting one. how was the install? Is it really just as simple as the three bolts between the cat & muffler and then removing the old one from the exhaust hangars?

While on the topic of exhaust rattle... I've had this annoying rattle, especially at idle. Took the rear exhaust off last night and dumped out a golf ball size of melted metal along with numerous pebbles! There is also a small bit of wire screen melted in as well. What is this, part of the catconverter?

Also, has anyone tried spray painting the exhaust with 1000 degree Rustoleum or the like? I happened to have a can and figured I'd give it a paint job while I had it off? Wonder how long it would last?

Would it hurt to run the car for a minute with the exhaust off? I don't think so and I want to hear what it sounds like!

I doubt that it could be anything from my cat, since I removed that and replaced with a test pipe four years ago. This thing is WFO, and sounds great, except for this very slight tinny rattle! It sounds just like a heatsheild rattle but is inside my damn muffler. The whole reason I bought this one was because all of the coments I had read about on this board. Some people have desribed it as too loud - that is when I knew I was going to get this one. I was thinking about a GHL , or Borla, but i am not going to spend $800-1000 on an exhaust that wont even give me any real HP benefit, and wont sound like a race car. Obin , I think , put it best when he described the sound in camparing it to a race car , comparing it to cars at the track. This is not a daily driver car, and I am going all out race car with it, just for my own fun! If you guys like pure racing cars the way I do, and want a good sounding exhaust for your 944, this is it. Easy to install, and yes, before I installed mine, I coated the entire thing with hi-temp paint. Just seems to make a little noise at idle, and might just be mine, but I will see if it gets any worse.
