Head Gasket Kit Contents?
Hi, I am wanting to order a head gasket kit from pelican for my early (84) 944. Does it include things like the 5 seals/gaskets to reseal the cam tower?
I couldn't find an actual parts list anywhere. Also, anything else I should order or replace? Not going to do Water pump or belts yet because we are not 100% sure the block is good. The engine had a broken valve on the #2 cylinder and has a 1 1/2" hole in the front part or the top of the cam tower. Luckily, the car came with a still in plastic redone head and an extra cam tower. So the plan is to install the new head and cam tower and see what happens. The cylinder walls and pistons don't look too bad, but the pistons could use a good cleaning. |

hey i got a head gasket kit from pelican for my early 85 944 a while ago...., what do you mean by the 5 seal/gaskets to reseal the cam tower??
it should include everything you need to seal the top of the engine from the exhaust system, head, cam, intake, and cam internal gaskets.(pretty much from the block to the to the top!!) i also believe it has a throttle gasket but im not sure??? i know it has new washers for the cam tower to bolt on the head and includes gasket. also should include new valve stems for valves which you should replace. and other small gasket for the coolant(top radiator hose) and a heater or air gasket that underneath the intake( forgot what it was called??) ill see if i can find you a list but this so far i got from the top of my head hope it helps... ill check tomorrow the kit still have it in the car (i think...??) -Cylinder head gasket -944.104.311.00 gasket which is the coolant top radiator hose gasket -928.104.193.12 valve stem seal -944.104.229.00 washer -999.113.349.40 shaft sealing ring 32x47 -928.102.189.02 gasket that goes to the back of the camshaft where the engine support/bracket is -900.123.140.30 sealing rings A 18x22 which are the camshaft screw caps -944.110.163.05 intake gaskets(4) -4 exhaust manifold gaskets and 2 connection gasket to the exhaust pipe I think thats it probably there some more but im not sure... but im for sure these are included. |

Thanks for the list.
I was talking about the rear cam tower gasket and the front camshaft seal and o ring, which it looks like it has. |

I got Victor Reinz kit for mine, ...it had all that, even though I already had a front seal job done recently at a local ripoff dealer and didn't need them, I have them for the future.

I am not advocating to buy it one place or another, but I found an auction in ebay (I did not buy this one btw) that has pictures listing each piece.

I was looking on Lindsey Racing to get gaskets from - I was going to "piece" one together so I can use the widefire head gasket (only place that has the WHOLE kit already is 944online, but its $210) - while I can piece one together for about $150
question was, Lindsey has this rubber coated steel gasket for the camhousing, is it something worth looking into or not? and fmartenies thank you for that, VERY good link |

I did some reading, and from what I found was the consensus I read was the the widefire gasket was a waste of money for a 2.5 stock engine.

Question on the red o-ring..labeled throttle body seal. Is that the gasket between the intake manifold and throttle valve? P/N 999 701 468 40, on page 40 of the fiche. If so, Pelican's part desc looks backwards. Just verifying so I don't pull them apart and then need to wait for a $3 part to get here in the mail.

The Wide Fire Head Gasket is great for o'ringed turbo heads -
The best gasket ever for the 944 NA heads is the Standard Victor Reinz - very hard to beat.

I'm not sure how my cylinder head is going to be rebuilt yet, so I'm considering it
I was also told to stay away from the "metal" stuff |

fmartenies yea that the gasket P/N 999 701 468 40 goes b/w the throttle body and intake manifold
Picas try using a steel gasket remover that what i used but just be careful scratching or making a indent on the head trying to remove the gasket. yes its a paint in the a@@.... but try to remove it by the outside that sticking out of the head n pry it out with your putty knife... you could also give a try a gasket remover from a auto store but i don't know how well does work..? |

I didn't have any problems taking the head gasket out. What I am thinking happened is that they blew a hole in the cam tower, tried to JB weld it, and then proceeded to break a valve and open back up the cam tower.
The reason for all of this? I think at some point in time he flywheel was replaced with aftermarket and there are NOT the correct identifications for TDC. Luckily, we had the head off so we set the cylinder at the top. It runs now, just not well for awhile. Gonna try replacing the ignition switch. Also, finally drove the car around the block today, after replacing the master and slave cylinders and correctly bleeding them. |
