84 944 Ignition Stays on After Key's Out

Bizzaro.....Just dropped $600 on new tires, $1,400 on rebuilt tranny, polished the baby up and went out on a nice cruise today to enjoy the hint of spring in the air, and voila, got home turned off the key.......and the car keeps running!!!!!! The ignition switch will not turn off. I turn the key to off, the radiator fan goes off, but the engine keeps running. I turn off the engine by reaching under the steering column and pulling out the computer plug. All the idiot lights stay on, and the chime bongs when the door is open. Guess the ignition switch is dead. I tried sprayng it with WD40 and tapping/banging on it, but I can't get the ignition to go off. It starts fine when I turn it to starter position. I found the ignition switch with keys here on Pelican, but how hard is it to pull the old one out and put in the new one? Does anybody have step-by-step on an early model, or do I have to take it to my mechanic? Thks! scott |

Perfect, thank you! That's exactly what I need.
Was hoping it wouldn't be as involved, but I suspected as much b/c the Audi dealer charged me $600 in 1989 to replace my Audi 5000 ignition switch. Hell, it's an ignition switch, if it was easy, it would be a field day for the criminals! Just ordered the part from Pelican, so looks like my coming weekend is spoken for! |

Its an easy fix. I just did it on mine last weekend.
$30 for the switch and about 4 hrs worth of elbow grease. Be careful removing the plastic around the steering column. Being 24 yrs old its pretty fragile.

Look for a vw switch, it's cheaper, maybe $15. Loosen the screws on the underside of the instrument cluster, you might need to buy some epoxy and tooth picks. That's worked for my broken bits. You can fix the switch if you want.
