Question about Exhaust Gaskets

Since I'm doing some repairs & have the exhaust removed, I'm replacing all for the exhaust gaskets and hardware.

The one gasket that I have a question about is actually a sealing ring and goes between the cat converter and muffler. Will these pipes seperate easily or does one pipe fit into the other and very tight.

I'm just asking because I haven't received the gaskets yet and I'm just doing my homework.

Also, a friend of mine suggested that I take the header to a machine shop and have them surface the part that mounts to the head - is that necessary? This is an '88 n/a that only has 49k miles and the exhaust is SS & pretty corosion free.

Thanks.....Vern

If the part you refer to is #2, the sealing ring ---aka donut---is very efficient. I have not replaced mine after a couple take apart and installs.

no it's not necessary surface the header....that's...unheard of.

if there are any black deposits, just use a soft green scrubbie and clean it up. u don't need to pay a machine shop to clean carbon deposits. that's entire point of a gasket...so the two surfaces don't have to be perfect

Thanks for the replies.

I probably won't need to replace the sealing ring, but since I bought a new one I maight as well.

I agree on not surfacing the header. Now that I have it removed, it's pretty clean. I did have an exhaust leak at one point and I had to tighten up an exhaust nut - that spot, the old gasket looked pertty bad. I'm anxious to have it all back together and possibly a little quieter than before.
