Yes, it had been a little over two years in my possession.
My initial plans were spec racing. The motor was rebuilt to stock spec- it got a new head gasket, cam tower gasket, rear seal, complete oil cooler gasket set, intake gasket set, new crank key, new balance shaft sprocket, new belts, new covers, heater core bypass, and a nice coating of ceramic paint. Internally, the motor showed true to the 94K on the odometer (the car has 94K on it, not 97K as in my original 2008 post..). After a near complete strip down (all that remains intact is what you see there- the chassis, some glass, and the rear suspension) the interior got the sound deadening removed and painted white, readying it for a cage. It was this time last year when I was overloaded with my work as chief engineer of a formula car racing team that I had to abandon the project. For about what I have invested in the car, Sid got everything I had- in boxes. I really wish I had time to complete it, or at least finish the engine bay and get the drivetrain back in her. Regardless, I know now that it is in good hands and I'm whole heartedly excited to see it continue on it's journey with another Pelican. This was going to be a semi-budget build for me, and I'm certain that the car can be competing in autocrosses for less than another $1500 into in. |
Oh there was debate on the way home... We can't decide between doing a full Gulf scheme or just painting it white and doing some Martini stripes...
|
My plan was silver or white with German colors, to match my helmet (which is still in the process of being painted, unfortunately)
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1275374999.jpg We had a good time loading her up Sid- Thank your folks for helping out so much for me, and for dealing with my decidedly un-Midwestener accent, clashing with my father's very midwesterned accent. Guess who stands out around those parts :) |
Lemme know when you get ready to do that decal... my offer still stands on that....
And that accent will fit right in out in Cali..... Whats up with that? Its sitting tarped tonight... We are having to rearrange all the buildings to make room... My car will get shuffled to another bay so this can go in the garage for the time being.... I'll have enough tools there and a work space I can leave things sit for a few weeks... The first step will still be the hot pressure washer though.... |
|
Nah... Been done too many times...
Got it all stored except the motor... Its getting a special home so right now it just sits in the back of the pickup in the shell.... How many WBR tech sessions do you think we can get out of this car Richard? |
Awesome looking engine. Its ok to paint the headers like that? I didnt think you could. Also,... is that silver paint on the rest of the engine? Thats awesome looking. Cant wait to do mine. I say start with a base color and then add accents using the german colors. Make it look race car looking. That would be cool.
|
The headers are painted with high temperature header paint.
The rest of the motor is painted with a silver ceramic paint. Tough stuff. |
Bummer, was always hoping you'd come out and race with us, Schumi.
Any racing plans for the new owner? :) |
That motor is sexy..... I really want to put in my living room... Hmm.... There's a thought.....
Dad wants to cram it in without painting the bay. I will hear none of it... That thing can't go in a dirty bay.... Eric... I plan to autocross the **** out of it... :D Anything I do will be done with 944 spec in mind tho... Won't do anything that can't be easily swapped back to spec... Problem for me is that you guys don't race anywhere near me... |
There is a group of Spec racers starting up in Texas - that may be closer to you. Enjoy, looks like a nice car, with a lot of nice details already done.
|
I'll keep an eye on them.... Problem is the closest track in Texas is TWS.... And I don't see them running there often...
It will likely be 6-8yrs before I could get very serious about wheel to wheel... I'm still in college... |
Don't listen to them, I've solved all your body/finishing issues. Needs a carbon fiber hood sticker, plastic body kit, huge spoiler and a light purple metal flake paint with tri-color racing stripes and graphics possibly tribal... oh and don't forget dual exhaust or possibly a rear mounted turbo routed with pvc pipe, or maybe a ram air system..... haha
Seriously though that engine looks amazing! I'm drooling just looking at it, good luck. |
Schumi
When you get to LA (where in LA?) maybe you could help me sort a few things on my car? |
So, Sid... once you get this one going, does your 944 become "street only" or will you still autocross it from time to time?

Hoping to have mine ready to go by the end of the year. 1987 944 NA in Gulf colors. There are some closer tracks...Eagle near Decatur TX, MSR in Cresson, and then there is Hallett in OK. I should be hitting all of those next year. For the most part...the TX/OK region is within 4.5 hour tow. |
You guys are going to run at hallet!? Uhoh...

Since I am not even finished setting up the suspension on it yet for autocross I will finish it before I throw money at this car.... I will be in about 2k when I am done. It definitely still see the occasional autocross Quote:
Hmm... Guess I will work more towards building a spec car... Can I just come run one or two events a year as an also ran? |
