Holy Crap Batman! Shredded Flex Damper Photos

Wow! & Unbelievable, comes to mind. I've been working on replacing my Flex Damper and I got the Torque Tube moved tonight so I can access the Flex Damper.

Here's some photos. It truely is Hump Day as I am exactly 1/2 Finished!

Old Flex Damper - Still on the Car. Torque Tube Dropped & Out of the Way:

What's Left - Outer Section Just Fell Right Out
Notice the little metal ears, that's what got me home as they were clacking
against a matching set on the auto-flywheel:

Your installing a new rubber center instead of a spring center?

Tidybuoy 06-02-2010 11:55 PM

Yes, this the a flex damper for an automatic transmission.

flash968 06-03-2010 05:11 AM

if only they made a beefed up version of that - the 968 tip has the same dumb thing - they age out and shred just like yours

wild man 06-03-2010 06:27 AM

That's exactly what happened, way-back-when, on my (lightly powered) 77 924 automatic. I think that setup (rubber flex-plate) was one of porsches worst ideas.

Tidybuoy 06-03-2010 09:27 AM

Well, now that I've been thru the process....I'm going to be on the hunt for a manual trans and all the necessary parts to convert. I'm kicking myself because when this happened, I saw an '88 with a broken timing belt for $2k on Craigs List (only 70 or 80k miles & local).

Anyway, now that I've seen how it's done, it's really not that bad....just a little time consuming.

some of the older street bikes, like GS 1000 had a hard rubber rear sprocket for a "smoother" ride. they do shred when you dump the clutch though.........

Yah, I think you can put a spring center clutch in place of that damper. Problem solved.

flash968 06-03-2010 09:57 PM

if only - i'd love to see it though

Tidybuoy 06-04-2010 12:28 AM

In the next year, I'm going to acquire all the parts that I need to convert to a manual trans. I love my car but I hate the fact it's an automatic. After doing this job, I can see that converting will not be too difficult.

...I follow with high interest your posts, thanks for pics...they will be useful to me...

Don't understand why, after all this job, you want to convert to manual!?

cvriv.charles 06-04-2010 06:49 AM

Manual is better:) And as to why he decided after the job,... who cares:) Manual is better:)

I want a manual for the fun-to-drive factor. Yes, it may be a waste of money after doing this job but it is the "doing" of this job that has taught me that it's not that difficult to do.

Keep in mind, when I say a year, it will probably be three :). Shall I post pictures of some of my other unfinished peojects...

Hmmm. Too bad you can't get a Trojan damper. They seem to know about rubber...

it could even have ribs for "her" pleasure

Slam 06-04-2010 10:40 AM

If she's the driver...

looneybin 06-04-2010 11:12 AM

"she" is the car - it IS an automatic afterall, just kidding Vern

Schumi 06-04-2010 11:50 AM

I looked at those pictures and honestly did not know what I was looking at.

I've never seen nor worked on an automatic 944. And I never want to.

If anyone else on here needs to replace there damper just put a used 944 spring center clutch in its place. Lots more affordable.

flash968 06-04-2010 03:28 PM

i sure wish that worked on the 968 - unfortunately the things don't fit
