To those who have replaced a torque tube

If you have ever replaced or removed a torque tube with the car on jackstands, god bless you. Took me about 14 hours to get the torque tube out of my car with it on a lift at my friends place, most of which was spent figuring out how to do it plus about 4 hours wasted from trying to shortcut things.

I first attempted to separate the trailing arms from the spring plates and torsion tube. I wanted to do this so i could avoid disconnecting the e-brake cable and brake lines. Also i figured it would be easier to balance the torsion assembly without all the weight from the trailing arms hanging off the back. So the plan was to leave the trailing arms hanging from the rear shocks. This ended up being a complete waste of time as i was unable to get the banana arms from the torsion tube to clear the upper spring hats on my coil overs in the back. So i ended up having to reconnect the trailing arms which was a major pain in the ass (heavy and awkwardly shaped!).

Will start putting the car back together later today.. hoping to have the rear of the car in one piece again by sunday night.. though that may be wishful thinking.

Anyhow, here are some pictures..

Trailing arms reattached and torsion tube assembly resting on stands.

Torque tube finally removed! Getting it out required dropping the rear torsion tube assembly down about 8-9" for enough clearance. The bellhousing just barely made it past the spare tire well.

Rebuilt tube from Constantine over on RL.. he made some custom, very heavy duty bearings / carriers which should outlast the car.

Prior to tearing everything apart, i test fitted KW V3 rear coil overs as i wanted to see what they did to the ride height, happily nothing will require reindexing which cut easily 5-6 hours off my torque tube swap.

Awesome. Total it took me several hours but I dont think it all added up to 14 hours though. But then again I was doing a complete dismantle so I just disconnected everything where you were doing work arounds. Congrats. And thats a pretty TT too.

Yeah, it's not a fun job!
Keep in mind since you disconnected the trailing arms you'll probably need the back end aligned. All i did with mine was drop the trans, drop the entire rear suspension and just let it hang (required disconnecting the brakes and the sensors), and you're done

Crap. I didnt know that. Oh well,... my front end is a tad off so I might as well get it all in one shot.

Yup, alignment is being done for sure. I was initially thinking i was going to need to reindex the torsion bars so i was hoping to knock everything out in one shot, but alas i dont need to touch them thankfully.

Really wishing i had just left those trailing arms attached, would have saved me so much time and trouble! Oh well, live and learn.

Just to follow up, i finish putting the car together monday night. I lost track of time, but i am pretty sure it was right around the 20 hour mark start to finish. This included installing my rear coil overs, adjusting the rear spring plate and wasting about 4 hours screwing around with disconnecting the rear trailing arms and trying to get them reconnected. This was by far the worse job i have ever had to do on one of these cars. That includes pulling the dash on my friends early '85 and rewiring a burnt up wire harness, clutch job on my 951, replacing the turbo on my 951 and pulling the cylinder head on the 951. There are no hard to reach, 'you gotta be kidding me' bolts or anything like that. Its just the shear amount of disassembly required makes it a major pain. Not something i would willingly attempt with the car on jackstands!
