Question Surprise under passenger seat

I'm recovering my seats so I had to pull them. had a hard time moving the passenger seat all the way forward. the was something under it stopping it. finally got it off and found what looks like a power inverter under there.

Is this a standard Porsche item or something some one added? it's in really rough shape and it was just sitting on the carpet. It is fully connected wiring wise, a round pin type connector where the DC would go and all kinds of different plugs into the AC outlets.. if this is what this is.

any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Robert

How about a picture, are you saying that there are DC and AC cables currently connected?

Wildman... one of my original guesses...

Since it's just sitting on the carpet I kinda figured it was aftermarket... but didn't want to start cutting wires until I was sure.

I've unplugged everything with the car running and the radio on with no change so I'd say it's not really functioning.

thanks for your input!

Robert

If the radio still plays through the speakers with the unit disconnected, then the wires are obviously not connected at the other ends. But are you sure that the rear speakers are working without it connected?

Looks like an old Blaupunkt power amp to me. That round line comes from the back of the headunit, the little black trapazoidal plugs feed the 4 speakers...pull one out and it will probably have a small flat bayonet and a round pin. The spade connectors are power and ground I think so be a little careful if you disco them as the red one might be a hot 12v+...

Antique.

Good advice on the +12.

Hmm, I think Blaupunkt just might be stock on that car. Although that DIN (round) connector WAS (maybe still is) a standard among manufacturers.

Wet carpet due to rain leak emanating from behind the seat. Ask me how I know...

Just to be sure, did you check it with the key in/on and the power to the radio on? Sometimes the leads will power up when the radio headunit is turned on but be dead otherwise.

Remove the unit and clean up any rust that has appeared under the unit in the body shell. If screws were used to mount the unit directly into the body metal under the seat, the galvanised coating will be compromised, and you might be getting some nasty body rust starting under there where the screws went in. If you're lucky, the rust will just be from the amp unit itself (which would certainly be junk now in any case, so just remove it and toss it.)

Inspecting the condition under the car at that point would be a good idea, too.

Yep. Rust is the antichrist. You need to remove that, toss it in the nearest dumpster and then spend the next several hours removing every single molecule of iron oxide from that car. Plug and seal any screw holes and treat permanently with an inhibiting paint. Do not slack on this. Rust is not to be tolerated in any quantity.

well... lucky for me it was just sitting on the carpet... the rust that was on the carpet peeled right off. I pulled it back in the area and the metal below is perfect, and my radio works just fine... must have been from a long time ago. I've found two sets of speaker wires through the car.

thanks for all the tips guys!

Robert

Porsche Crest

I bought my '87 924S in 2007--Started cleaning and fixing up, as the PO used it as a daily driver, and although mechanically strong, the interior and engine compartment were "messy". My surprise, when I removed the seats to completely clean, was two sets of women's panties under the passenger seat!

Good thing I found those before my wife did!
