Torque on and removing starter
 

Yesterday, I tried to replace or repair my clutch master and slave cylinders. Master was a piece of cake (relatively) but when I tried to remove the starter, I could not budge the two bolts holding it to the car ( even with a decent breaker bar). Just how much torque in the way of pounds needs to be placed on those bolts?

(And I have a good friend coming over Tuesday who is much stronger than I am to finish the job.) :)

Also, is there a way of bleeding the slave without removing the starter?

It is tight but if I remember correctly I have bled the slave without removing the starter. I have put a clear hose on the end of the bleed nipple but only after I was able to actually loosen up the bleed bolt. I have had to gently use heat in the past to loosen the bleed bolt. One of the bolts is hard to get to on the starter and there is only enough room for a wrench. You might want to use BP blast and or heat first before you try to remove. The started is at the very bottom and collects water which could form rust around the threads.

I think at the most I used a 1/2 drive rachet to remove mine. Your's are obviously on way to tight. Take a hammer to it with a 1/2 drive until the threads break free.

my bolts were not that tight. One bolt faces forward, the other to the rear.

you should be able to bleed the slave without having to remove the starter, just put a small hose on the end of the bleeder screw so you don't spray fluid all over the starter.

...those nuts on the starter for the battery were so fused on there when I tried to loosen them, I broke the ceramic away...so I had to replace the starter with a rebuilt Bosch...wow, what a difference in starting...sounds brand new.
