what shade are phone dials supposed to be?
Hi guys,
I have a set of phone dials, from an '88, i believe, that are 2 different shades of silver. 2 of them have either been refinished, or the paint color has changed over time. 2 of them are a bright silver, kind of like the silver used on newer wheels (turbo twists, etc...) the other 2 are more like the Zermat silver color of the 944 itself. I did not notice the color difference when i bought them, the brighter outside it is, the less noticable the difference in color. so, which is correct? anyone want a set of slightly color-unmatched phone dials, otherwise in near perfect condition? they don't fit my car ('84) here is a pic showing the color difference. the color rendition is pretty accurate on my monitor. It doesn't appear the either of your phone dials are the actual color. The one on the left is way too bright. It does appear to have been refinished as you said. The one on the right is closer, but hasn't been refinished and the color has weathered itself to a yellowish silver.
If you're going to refinish them, go to a paint store and look up the correct color in the books they should have there... What size are your phones? 15" or 16"? They look 15" to me but I can't tell from the picture. Rob-O |

I always thought the "original finish" was just the polished metal with a clearcoat?

No, the originals (at least on my 88) are primed with a white shade of primer, then painted metallic silver, then clear coated. Aged clear coat is what causes it to turn yellow. (take a look on the inside of the rim and you'll see even more evidence of this fading.
I refinished mine last summer with Wurth Metallic Silver, but was not impressed with the results. I'm either a bad painter or the paint was bad, as it left a smooth surface on the facing areas, and a rough "dusty" texture on the inner horizontal surfaces. To me the one on the left looks refinished and the one on right looks faded. |

The one on the right appears to be the closest to stock. Where I work, we make the plastic wheel covers for a lot of the automotive manufacturers. The best color to use is the one we paint the Chrysler wheel covers with. It's made by both Red Spot and Rohm Haas. The color number is "AH2 PAK" and it is called "Sparkle Silver".
