Late N/A Engine - Keep or Sell?

When I bought my 83, it was non-running and per PO had a bad HG (horrible I later found out). To protect myself, I bought a 2nd NA engine off CL for $200 - the guy didn't know much about it but said he believed it was the later gen. He also included the DME. The motor no doubt needs rebuilt but its all there and I figured worst case scenario I could part it out and break even .

So my question would be...if I kept that motor and rebuilt it on the stand would it be a viable back up for the original in my 83? Or is it too difficult to make that swap with the computers (remember I have both DME's). My other choice is to break it down for parts and keep some and sell some.

What is it that removes the doubt about it needing to be rebuilt? If properly maintained, these engines are good for many miles. I don't believe there should be any difficulty in making the swap with the computers. Don't break it down and part it out, if you can help it.

if u swap DME's, u'll have to swap AFM's too.

although i think a early DME can run a late engine with a early AFM...

i'd say keep it yea...or sell it to me for $200

The rust I can see through the spark plug hole? The rats nest in the headers? No known history? To me, its not worth the risk of installing, getting the DME and everything straight, then finding I have to pull and rebuild.

The back story if there is further doubt: The guy I bought it from was buying a Suzuki Samurai to jack up and play in the mud with from a wannabe thug with a wannabe chop/custom shop in VA Beach(think Camaro bodies on Blazer chassis). The PPO (previous previous owner) had a 944 beat to hell, and the Samurai had a blown motor. So he claimed he was going to swap them...yeah pretty genius...but never got around to it. That's the story the PO got so there is no credible history on it, no idea how long it sat, and it wasn't properly drained. PO sold to me so he could put the money into a motor that works in the Samurai.

After hearing that story I'm not sure anyone's going to want to buy the whole thing. Parting it out might be a good idea cause I'm sure some of the parts are still good.

I've got dibs on the crank shaft if you do decide to part it out. Assuming it's not complete garbage.

Wouldn't sell the whole thing, too many parts I would want to keep. I think I will put it on a stand and re do it next summer.
