Question about Dexron

I went to the auto parts store today to get some ATF Dexron II to put into my power steering reservoir. The guy told me that they no longer make Dexron II and it has been replaced with Dexron III. Does anyone know if this is true? Is it okay to put Dexron III into my power steering?

If you have a leak don't use that crap. Heck I wouldn't use it to start with. Try regular power steering fluid - my experience is that it works the best.

Dexron III is fine. Porsche calls for it in the power steering system and not power steering fluid.....

NO, no no, don't use power steering fluid and for that matter synthetic auto trans fluid. More than one person has sprung a rack leak shortly after putting in synthetic fluid.

It is OK to use Dextron III as finding II is about impossible in the US. I believe it is still available in Europe but III works fine with the seals, which is what you need to be worried about.

Dexron II is still available here in The Netherlands... don't know why they don't use it in the US anymore?

There was a discussion about this very topic not too long ago (you could find it pretty easy) and the consensus was that Dexron ATF was definitely the way to go. That's what my manual ('87) recommends too. I'm guessing that the change from II to III has to do with the chemistry that is "upgraded" by the manufacturer over time. I hate to tell you this but when I started changing my own oil, the grade was "SC". We're up to "SJ" now.

Almost all power steering fluid IS ATF in just about all cars, there are only a FEW that don't use ATF fluid...Honda is one for example.

Hmm, just went for some new power-steering fluid (looking for Dexron ATFII) but III was only available. Maybe they stopt using it over here in europe as well?
