968 gearing options

I have a 500hp ls1 engine that I'm putting into a 944. I've heard the 968 transmission is stronger than the 951 but its gearing is too short. Is there anyway I can get different gearing for it?

You might be able to get different gearing but with 500hp you're probably better off with a 951S transaxle. The lower gears are hardened. The 968 may not hold up to the pounding if you launch the car repeatedly off the line.

there are options, ranging from individual gears to a ring and pinion - none of them are cheap, or easy

the weak spot in the 968 box is the 1-2 synchro hub - it has been known to fail on track cars, and wear out on hard used street cars, causing difficult shifting in the best case, to complete lockup in the worst

it will be a lot easier to use a 951 box in a 944, as you would need to change a lot more to use a 968 box

plus, with the gear ratios being so close together in a 968 box, you may find that with a V8 you are constantly shifting, which is counter to the point of having a V8
