Unstable idle speed and dies
 

Hey guys can I ask your help on this? My car was running great and then in the middle of a drive the car started acting up and getting worse and worse there was little power in higher RPMs and few minutes later there is no power to move on its own. I replaced the fuel filter and spark plug wires. I even tested the fuel pump. I tried looking at the vacuum lines I did not see anything that stuck out. Here is a video I uploaded so you can see what I am talking about.

DME sensor? DME itself?

Well, maybe...

Check your distributer and the rotor for fit. make sure the rotor is screwed on tight.

Wiggle the reference sensor connections at the top of the rear engine where they connect. Some times the connectors get corroded.

Clean all engine electrical connections--Per Porsche. Especially the AFM connector.

Clean all grounds.

Could be a fouled fuel injector. Get a noid light and check . If you can get your car to start, grab each injector and "feel" it---does it feel like it is working?

When I uploaded the video it was at work and youtube is blocked and I really dont want to get caught bypassing firewalls lol I will upload it to youtube from home soon.

Have you tried your spare DME/Fuel Pump relay? Here is a link to make a spare.

You have replaced the fuel filter, tested the fuel pump.....maybe the relay is bad?

i would venture to say its a bad afm, seen them act like this quite a few times. but i would check your fuel pressure first because its free to test, also you can unplug the afm and see if it makes the car run different, if anyone has the specs you can test the afm with an ohm meter as well

Well I tried the DME relay jumper and I tried unplugging the MAF and it ran the same. Maybe the timing belt jumped a tooth?

if you unplugged the afm and it ran the same its probably the afm...

Ok I am trying to find what the ohm rating should be now if you guys find it let me know or I will post it here once I do so anyone else having this problem can learn from it. Thanks again!

Well I tried to jumper the DME and had a friend with a 87 944 let me use his MAF and same thing. Any more ideas? Im running out of things that could be wrong lol.

The BIG one.

Prepare by charging your battery to full charge.
Grab the big connector at the DME Computer under the dash and wiggle the connector. Gently tap the DME computer around the sides. (You're trying to see if you have a solder break)
Try starting the car.

Check the model number of your DME computer-----then check your friends DME computer.
If the same computer....

If still no start/run. Remove the DME computer from your friends car. (disconnect battery first). Disconnect your battery and remove the DME computer-----install your friends computer.

Connect the battery.

Start the car.

Let us know what happens.

Thanks so much for your help guys!! Im sorry I have not responded back in while I have been really busy and just got some time to work on the car this winter. I fixed it. The problem was the reference sensor. Got a new one from Joe at jbmracing.com. Thanks guy!
