Alternative rear end ratios

Are there alternatives to the stock rear end ratios available?
Can you recommend somewhere to have a transaxle rebuilt with new ring and pinion gears?
TIA,

is your car a 944 8v or 16v car . on my 16v car i use two deferent tran's when i race . i will use a v8 trans at low speed tracks like line rock and nhms and go back to the 16v trans for higher speed tracks like the glen , mosport , tremblant . in my 944 v8 cars i just have the oe stock trans . there so low on tork it would never pull a taller gear . there are 3 FDR's for the USA market the 9:35 , 8:31 and 8:27 .

My '83 is an 8v engine. What cars did the lowest final drive ratios come in?

you have the lowest in the car if its a oe stock v8 trans . all v8 944's 9:35 dfr . if you want to run up front in ITS get a 16 v motor .

Unfortunately the 16v motor isn't as fast as the lighter 8v car.
Are there other ratios that can be installed in the tranny?

Yes ,custom final drive ratio ,here in Italy they make them for rally cars , built and installed is about 1500euro. The ones i heard of are unusable for street cars ,very short gearing and top speed of about 90-100 mph .Here is the specialist that make them for the 944 http://www.kitcar.it/.

you could do what i did .the 16 v motor is only 419 lbs to the v8 motors 398 lbs full dressed . the 16v motor puts out more hp and tork . putting it into a 84 body like i did was the plus . i still run the 15x7 and 15x9 fuch wheels . i would do 2 things . check the rules about doing a custom fdr . and think real hard about toping out at 90 to 100 mph .
