968 Mirror Wiring - Revisited

All -
I have searched all over the internet for some reliable wiring information for installing the 968 aero mirrors to the early (I have an '83) 944. Many sites reference a 951 website, but the site is down, and for some reason, my overpriced shop manuals do not have ANY information on electric mirrors for the '83. Does anyone have the Rosetta stone for this installation?

Thanks in advance!!

Pelican Technical Article: Installing 968 Mirrors on the 944

Here is a chart I made showing wire color and it's function. This was done on my '86 951.*

Hey thanks! I can't believe how much of a pain this has been!! I read the write up on the board before undertaking the effort, but the wiring has not been the most straightforward. It's interesting that the '83 only uses WHT, BRN, BLU, BLK, GRY colors for the mirror wiring. Guess I'll go try this out later today!
Thanks again for the assist!

I installed 968 mirrors on my 83. The wiring is different for a few reasons.

The RH 968 mirror has (2) wires for the outside temp sensor. I did not use them.
968 mirrors have (2) motors independently wired. You will have (2) wires for the heater, (2) wires for up/down motor and (2) wires for the L/H motor.

The early cars had a jumper wire that split to to feed the motors.

I have good news / bad news for you.

Good news: I have wiring diagrams for the early cars and 968. Actually I got a 968 mirror wiring diagram from my local Porsche dealer. So you might want to pursue that avenue.

The bad:

I have these diagrams but I'm moving this weekend and everything is packed. So I cannot respond to you quickly. But in a couple of weeks, I could send them to you.

Thanks for the offer - do what you can, when you can. If I figure it out prior to your sending the info, post it anyways for the next poor bum who's trying to work this out.

The Solution

To get your 968 mirrors working on a 944 early (or 924 for that matter), you just need to add an SPDT 12v relay inside each door (total 2 relays) to the existing wiring.

Steps 1 & 2 Connect:
Door’s BROWN (chassis ground) to one side of the coil…each door.
Door's WHITE (+12v when left/right motion selected) to the other side of the coil...each door.

Driver’s Door

Step 3 Connect:
Driver Door's wire to BLUE Mirror’s BLACK & to Mirror’s BLUE (connect ALL 3 together)

Step 4 Connect:
Driver Door's BLACK wire to SPDT relay term. 30 (the center/common relay contact)

Step 5 Connect:
Driver Mirror’s RED to SPDT relay term. 87a (the normally CLOSED relay contact which will control up/down motion)

Step 6 Connect:
Driver Mirror’s WHITE to SPDT relay term. 87 (the normally OPEN relay contact which will control left/right motion)

Passenger’s Door…(slightly different wiring then the driver’s door)

Step 7 Connect:
Passenger Door's BLACK wire to Mirror’s BLACK & to Mirror’s BLUE (connect ALL 3 together)

Step 8 Connect:
Passenger Door's BLUE wire to SPDT relay term. 30 (the center/common relay contact)

Step 9 Connect:
Passenger Mirror’s RED to SPDT relay term. 87a (the normally CLOSED relay contact which will control up/down motion)

Step 10 Connect:
Passenger Mirror’s WHITE to SPDT relay term. 87 (the normally OPEN relay contact which will control left/right motion)

DONE !
