Transmission Fluid Change
Alright finally getting around to chaning the trans fluid. I got some Castrol Manual Gear fluid. This is a good brand? This is the fluid that came up on the computer when I asked the guys at Advanced Auto Parts what kind I needed. Also a friend said I might need additives for it too? Do I need anything to add to the trans fluid? Or just strait Trans fluid?

does your car have a factory lsd?? (limited slip differential) meaning power is distributed to both rear wheels and not just one side. if so use swepco or redline, if not your fine with what you have.

Well I'm not sure. I have a 944 1988 4cyl 2.5L 5speed N/A Celebration Edition. How do i find out what it is?

jack the car up from the back just enough to get the rear wheels off the ground, turn one wheel in one direction, if the oposite wheel spins in sink with the spinning wheel ( same direction forward or backward) you havd lsd. if the other wheels turns the other way than the way your turning, you have a non lsd or open differential.

Call Porsche America and ask them for the option list. They will want you to fax proof of ownership (I sent my registration) and will call you back with a list of the options on your car. That's how I found out my 951 has an LSD among other things.
I used Redline recently and it helped with a slight grind into 3rd. I'll probably grab some Swepco and change it again soon - the local PCA chapter has a discount with a supplier. I'll probably also get some BradPenn oil for the next change too. |
Redline MT 90. GL-4 rated lubes are specified for 944 trans.

X100 on using Swepco 201 75W90 Trans Gear lube and Brad Penn 20W50 engine oil.

Oops, forgot about the option code sticker, probably because some DPO painted over or removed it on my car...

hope it is ok to post this here, here is Clarks garage's trani fluid change Manual Transaxle Fluid Change I used a very small oil can with a pump (took for ever and it takes 3 bottles) Yes remove the top bolt first (do not drain it until you know you can refill it some say hit the bolt to "wake it up" I hit every thing on this car with WD-40 before starting to loosen up the "old stuck nuts and bolts) I believe it is a 17mm hex key head

Yes to the 2 synthetic oils mentioned above.
I use Valvoline HD gear oil. It is for our hypoid gears and will not ruin/eat the yellow metal syncros. Cheap. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1285850175.jpg John |

whats the difference between the gl-3 and 4 its good for yellow synchros and the other not ?
