Torque improvement form Lindsey Boost Enhancer in '86 951
My car's mods at 88K mileage:
K&N Autothority Stage 2 Chips Fabspeed 3.0" Exhaust w/ Cat Bypass I need some more midrange boost. Eventually I may mod the car to enable more boost, but I'm keen on reliability now and am interested in the boost control. Will the Lindsey add more torque in the lower gears and by how much? Also, If I decide to replace the wastegate and go with a Boost Controller what Wastegate and What Boost Controller ( Manual or Electronic) ? Anything that needs to be upgraded on my '86 951 by doing these alterations as well? Thanks, Jeff Last edited by P951; 10-05-2010 at 04:15 PM.. Reason: Changes in Spelling needed |

Just my personal experience. There are a few trains of thought on the best way to cheaply modify a 951. You need to think about what is safe for the engine also.
The boost enhancer works well if you want to stay on the cheap end. Personally i would get rid of the Autothority Chips. The tune on them is not very good, uber rich in the mid range and very lean up top. This is basically the opposite of what you want the AFR's to be for good spool up and safe running at high rpm. Also with the boost enhancer and the Autothority's this gets a little more pronounced. I bought my car with that basic setup and it worked well, but there is alot of room for improvement over that. I would see AFR's drop into the mid 10's and dithering into the high 12 range which is asking for a blown gasket or burnt valves. I would personally save the money on the boost enhancer and pickup a better set of chips, either Vitesse or the Max951 chips are good if you are still using the stock airflow meter. A good wastegate goes along way also. There are ups and downs to either option though.. Tial 38mm (best option i think) -Relatively cheap and you get a brand new part, not a rebuilt or modified stock part. -Would not ever need to be upgraded if you want to go with more power -Can be run in either dual or single port operation. Single port is good if you want to retain the stock boost cut safety feature. Dual port allows for much more accurate boost control and good spool up (similar to running the boost enhancer). -Downside is it requires adapter plates, and installation can SOMETIMES be a pain, particularly if you have the 1-piece crossover still (non-upgraded '86 951's). The LR club and dual port wastegate has the same pro's. -Also is a direct fit, no adapters needed. -Downside is cost.. you end up laying out ALOT for this with the core charge. Mind you the core charge is void if the wastegate you send in is damaged in anyway, which is possible (the body can crack). Also money is deducted for each broken stud on your factory wastegate, and i will guarantee its not unfeasible to break all 8 studs on that thing taking it out! So it ends up costing a fair amount of money (almost twice that of a Tial with adapters) if your core ends up being no good. Here is in my opinion, the best setup you can run that is safe and still offers solid performance for a relatively cheap price. I would expect the car to put down easily in the area of 250-60whp @ 15psi with a 26/6 and 280-90whp @ 15psi with the 26/8. -Boost controller; either an electronic or GOOD manual dual port. Electronic's have alot of bells and whistles such as gear selectable boost, multiple boost settings..etc. Manuals are just bare bones simplicity. -Chips; Vitesse and Max951 are the best, no others are even worth looking at in my opinion. -Wastegate; Tial 38m. Run it in dual port mode. The downside of this setup is you loose the factory boost cut protection as you bypass the cycling valve. This is not a big deal in my opinion.

Techno, if I already have 951MAX chips and was looking to get the LBE, would that be a bad idea? I'm going to upgrade my wastegate after that but don't have the money right now. The LBE looks awesome for the price and people seem to like it...

Thank you Techno Duck. I've printed that out and will use as a map for future upgrades. Thank you for your time
