balance belt

Have leaks in front of engine. Pulled everything apart to get at front end, not fun. I noticed the balance belt pully is one tooth off from the proper index. Will this cause the vibration ar 3800 RPM's?

Usually not. But fix it.

The real reason for vibration is usually the BB (balance belt) pullys are installed wrong.

Here is the correct pully installation. Note the dark spot on the top of shaft is the keyway. Note the "O" & "U" pully orientation.

Vibration at 3800 can also be caused by the rubber clutch disc falling apart if you still have it.

OR, do you feel the vibration in the center of the car? TT (torque tube/drive axle) bearing failure.

When I bought my 83 944 the prior owner had just paid for a head job after the timing belt broke and I had a vibration at 4k and above. Turns out my timing and balance shafts were a tooth off.

Thanks for the info guys. Looking at the balance shaft pullies the marking on mine do not have all the markings. I only have the o and nothing else. No U or notch on the side of the pully. How do I index them?

Thanks

The keyways that are unmarked are the ones to use. The ones marked with a "0", are where the indexing "spikes" on the front guides go into.

there is a great write-up on the Arnworx site for balance shaft alignment, look under "my projects"

Dead easy: balance shaft keyways face up, notches on sprockets align with timing marks on belt cover. It really is idiot proof.
