Best cam break in procedure?
One of the upgrades that my 951 is undergoing (already underwent) is a late cam (15509) swap-in. After first building oil pressure, and then starting & warmup, I figured maybe running it @ 2000rpm for 20-30 minutes, before driving it would be appropriate. Does that sound right?
Or should I first let it idle until all of the lifters are fully pumped up, and then commence the above procedure?

if lifters and cam is new, start and run at 3,000 for 20 mins, check for leaks and overheating fast. after 20 mins, shut down, drain oil , remove filter, put in new oil and filter and zddp additive and drive it like you stole it.

Not new. Used cam broken into used lifters not originally mated together.

i'd still do what KEV951 said. that is how I broke in my jeep engine for my stroker install. but with a used cam and used lifters (that have never been paired together) I would still do this as if they were new.

Isn't 3K kinda high, the most I've heard was 2500?

well, for my low-revving stroker, it was between 1800 and 2700...sort of varying up and down, not staying the same for too long. i have also had zero problems since it was built other than the trans deciding it wanted to be locked in 2 gears....

So you are running all stroked up, at 2.7? I can only dream about that. But from what you said, it looks like I will alter the procedure that I will use for breaking in the cam/lifters on my 2.5 to 20-30 minutes of slowly varying the no-load rpm's between 2-3K, after full lifter pump-up is achieved. I know that they will chatter for a while at first because they seemed to loose quite a bit of oil when I did the swap. Thanks all, for the input.

well it wasn't my porsche, it was my jeep engine that was a 4.0 stroked and bored to a 4.6L
just watch the temp gauge! that was my min concern when doing this. it also doesn't hurt to have a big fan in front of the radiator

Gotcha. I assume you meant that temp was not your minimum concern, but rather your main concern. How high should it be allowed to go on the gauge? Before I first start it up, I could hotwire the fan relay so that the fans will run continuously throughout the break-in procedure.

well, my jeep usually runs about 180-190 all the time with no condenser in the front. I actually cooked my radiator (stocker at the time) and after the temps rose to about 210-220, they slowly started to fall and hovered at 200 10 mins into the beak-in. closer to about 20-25 mins, they went down to 190 and stayed there. Had I seen any higher temps, i would have shut her down....
I ditched the factory fan clutch and was running 2 electric fans the whole time. ( but keep in mind this was a brand new engine with very tight tolerances, to the .0005 for everything I checked) so it loosened up after the 25 min mark. I did have to adjust my dizzy some because i had the fuel sync cranked up too far and in about 5 mins my manifold was just glowing bright red!!! luckily my buddy was there and backed her off some and that may be too when the temps started to go down as well. when done, I dropped the filter and took a peak inside of it. It did have some glimmer of metal but no actual fragments. the oil came out the same way. Since then, I have installed a 3 core radiator from csf with an actual radiator cap ( I converted it from the closed system {87-90} to the more modern open system with a rad. cap.) I also run brad penn 10w-40 in my jeep because everyone says they suffer from premature cam lobe wear due to the "new" oils and the lacking of zddp. good idea of the fans, mine are on a toggle switch on the jeep. i don't even bother turing them on when going down the road. just in town and on the trail they are on, usually though only one.

A fresh K27/8 build will also be getting broken in at the same time. Also some fresh belts, rollers, and seals, too.
EDIT: Is there anything particular that needs to be done for breaking in a new turbo build?
