Steering column joint

So my mystery clanking still has not been fixed after the AC was moved away from the sway bar. After literally hours of looking around under the car, I finally think I found it. Where the steering column hooks onto the rack (U joint looking things), there is play. I can move the part attached to the steering column back and forth and it seems to be making the same noise. I cannot find any kind of adjustment on it, what in the world can I do to fix this?

The steering column has two u-joints, one at each end. In addition, each end has a bolt, that keeps it one the splined shafts coming from the steering wheel, and going into the steering rack. Typically, you need to remove these bolts, and loosen the bolts holding the steering rack to the cross-member, to remove the steering column.

Check to see if you have a bolt & nut on each end. The lower end is easily visable, below the air cleaner, the upper joint is under the brake booster, and barely visable between the firewall and brake booster. I think they are 12mm bolts.

If both bolts are present, and tight, the play could be in the u-joints themselves. They are typically pressed in fittings, and not really adjustable.

good luck,
JM
