Porsche Crest is the 944 a real porsche?

hey guys, i was talking to a guy i know and he was telling me that the porsche 944 is really a VW...? i thought i read that the 944 was a Porsche, Audi, and VW project, and that VW and Audi dropped out and porsche was the one that continued. Can someone help me out? thanks

Some 911 guys think that any Porsche that is water cooled, and does not have the engine in the back is not a real Porsche. I think they are just jealous of the 50/50 weight distribution.

The 914 started as a Porsche/VW project. The 924 was a Porsche/WV/Audi project.

What you described was the beginnings of the 924. It was an amazing car for it's time. While the 944 is a direct evolution from the 924, it is all Porsche.

stogie25, you are aware of course that they improved the 911 drastically by making it more like the 944, that is to say water cooling it?

Heard the story so many time now that it get in one ear & come out the other one without stopping anywhere, sure the 944 has VW /Audi parts, so his the 911. Why not since those three companies had pretty close ties & were supplying parts to each other & take any 911 aparts & you'll also find dozen of VW/Audi parts. The 944 running gear were developed versions of those of the 924 but that slant four came from Porsche not VW/Audi saying that it was half of the 928 V8 is a fairly massive generalization ,but that is basicaly what it was & when Porsche design the 928 motor they did started from the ground up.Next time some 911 guys want to get smart ask them what they consider the 912 to be a VW or a Porsche.

I am. Most of the 911 people I hang out with have old SC's. They also like the 944. Many of them had 944's when they were new.

Designed by Porsche? Check. Must be a real Porsche, then.

watercooling was in part due to the limits of reliable power production from an aircooled motor in that location...a 993tt had over 400hp...imagine how much heat that makes.

Hello there,
I have a 911 3.2 and a 944S2 cabriolet.
Both are Porsche but both are built on different philosophy I think. This is what make it even better. The driving experience is completely different but are equally enjoyable.
I see more the 3.2 as my boy racer car where the S2 is just a wonderful car to cruise along.
on the track, I bet you that a well prepared 944 will give a very hard time to any track prepared 3.0 or 3.2 as well.

Porsche will not have bothered putting their crest on something they didn't believe or technically not right. it is just something different for the people who thought different of Porsche at the time.
unfortunately these days, when you think different you are considered weird.

I own a 924 and love the car. I really don't give a flying %^&* what "true" porsche owners think. Everything about the car is fantastic, especially since it's the first car I've owned that has a manual transmission.

Let's not forget that Porsche made tractors and armor for the Wermacht in WWII (the famous Tiger turret with the 'shot trap' comes to mind). And refresh my memory... Who was it exactly that designed the Volkswagen in the first place?

Well said Fred. That is pretty much what the article I posted conveyed. Just in a bit more detail.

1. oh god no this crap again. Go to wikipedia and search on the 924, then search on the 944 it will tell you all you "need" to know.

2. The whole "real Porsche vs. not real Porsche" is a joke. I own a 944, I love it. I have driven 911s of various ages and I love them too. I guess I am the rare Porschephile who just loves any P car regardless of how its cooled, where the motor is or which side the stupid ignition key is on. In my eyes, if it was sold new in Porsche showroom, came with a Porsche warranty and had the Porsche badges on it, its a real Porsche.

3. I can't believe people are actually taking this thread seriously (including myself)

Didn't the 944 actually save Porsche during the 80's crisis?

The 924 AND the 944 did yes. They both made Porsche affordable for those who normally wouldn't have bought one and the sales volume did wonders for Porsche. This is just a silly spat between the so called purists.

Just like Sportsters aren't "real" Harleys, only the "big" bikes are.
