If you are going to jump in and do your own then you cut off the old boot with a sharp knife (Easiest way is an Exact-o razor). Other wise Pelican sells the Knob and Boot already assembled (see in this thread above) so you can just toss the old into a save box.

Fist pull the leather boot over the knob, then the inner sleeve (rubber Boot)if you still have it on,then remove the retaining spring, boot knob should slide off thet shift lever. To remove the the SL pry off the the spring washer which lock the pin that goes through the shifter rod (leading back to the tranny)be careful not to loose the spring washer.Last remove the the bearing bracket & then the plastic bearing shell. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315484407.jpg

matthewb - sorry for the slow response - the boots i replaced were for my son's and my car - we are on a strict budget here so we went to the fabric store and bought a piece of black leather and hand sewed them ourselves - took about 2 hours each - total cost for both was $30 - my son's car is pretty much a total redo so i want him to get as much hands on experience as possible - they came out great

Well I guess no money can pay for that kind of counseling, contrary to you I was all by myself when I did mine & the only 944 in a 500 miles radius, like mention didn't even know that such forums has Pelican & RL existed so probably the reason I took the easy way out. Then 5/6 after I bougth mine a good friend of mine did show up with a 931,it was the happiest day in my life at least I wasn't alone in my part of the wood owning a Porsche. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...s/beerchug.gif

Ernie, Thanks for the reply. I guess this amounts to converting from a one piece to a two piece setup?

Not getting what your saying by converting to a (two piece set up) you don't have to convert anything just replace. If your boot/knob are gone simply buy the boot like Matt did & recover it or buy the combo booth /knob (less work & hassle) but more expensive. If your shifter feel loose & wobbly either it's the pin the bushing or the ball at the end of your SL which are gone ,but if needed to be replace buy both the shifter lever & the bushing.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315656201.jpg

Ernie,

Then I need to replace all three. Shifter lever pin is worn, both boots shot and the bushing may be shot, too.
I'll plan to buy the shifter lever, combination boot/knob and bushing all separately to replace what I have now? Where do I get the C clip that holds the knob to the lever or is it not needed?

Thanks for the reply!

You got it rigth 3pcs ,the retaining spring ("C" clip) & the spring washer at the end of shift lever pin you (re) use the same ,no need to buy new one.:D

Another option is to drill out the pin and replace it with a bolt and nut. I tend to do things the hard way, but it's light on the wallet.

Yes I guess you could, but there is always the ball at the end of the shift lever which after some 20 years or so is not new anymore.___to djnolan about that ball you want to slightly grease it before pressing it in the bushing.:)

As for the clip attaching the shift knob/boot assembly to the lever? Drill that out too? The old one doesn't have a clip and pelican doesn't sell it...

NO DRILLING ANYTHING everything your buying is a direct replacement.Lord are you ever getting mixe up here(Please peoples keep it simple so the man can replace his shifter one of the most simple job to DIY on any 944).Are you telling me that "C" clip is missing on the shift lever (see pic) ? if it was the than boot/knob would have come out easily since that clip lock the boot/knob to the shift lever. If so and you can't find it anywhere else order one from Auto Atlanta - Porsche Parts and Accessories part#477-771-269 prize at $1.55, lol I hope someone don't come on and find that part expensive & tell you to lock it with a piece wire:eek:http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315668151.jpg

Drill out the hour glass shaped shifter pin, then replace with a nut and bolt.. The plastic socket is still original on my car. Not sure who mentioned it was a problem, but they're full of shyte.

It's me & I'm not full of (shyte) if so I'm not the only one with time and use the bushing will wear out. LOL anybody who own a 944 knows that.Ask around & you will see the beside the pin wearing out on the shifter lever the bushing is next in line.If yours is ok glad for you but it doesn't mean that other are that lucky.

Ernie, thanks, you gave me all the info and parts numbers I need to do the job. The rattling loose shifter and tattered boots will soon be history. Again thanks. Apologize for hijacking someone elses thread. It sounds like the originators of this discussion did a fine job restoring their 944. The fun of these cars is there all just a little different and a new challenge. All the best to everyone!

If you lost the e-clip that fits on the end of the shifter shaft, I read recently that you can use a 5/16 e-clip. Easily found at the LAPS or hardware store. YMMV
