Shift boot
My hands are worn out. I bought the wheel skins boot, same as the the one I bought 17 years ago for my pop. I did not install that one, he did, I wore it out though. Installation was not fun from what he recollected.
Slipping the boot into place was not hard, tucking the leather and getting the cap on, was. I used some spit, a hair dryer and the lever from a large nail clipper to massage the boot to the point where the cap would fit. All three prongs for the cap were broken before starting. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1293769727.jpg I had to massage the leather a bit more at this point. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1293769741.jpg The pictures aren't very good, but it looks really nice. The fit is superb, nice and tight, just one tiny wrinkle. It takes time, but being patient pays off. I'll post better pictures when I find a better camera. |
Looks good! Great job! I've never personally done one of those, but I've heard that profane language is pretty much a necessity to complete the job! lol!

Where did you get yours from? I have one on order... I think I tried this once before and SENT IT BACK... going to try again!
|
i just ordered a brand new one - all of the ones i had seen made the seam pop up, and since that rests in the cup of the palm of your hand (fingers are never supposed to touch a shifter) it would wear a spot in my hand and be uncomfortable
perfect fit - smooth fit of the leather - it wasn't expensive either really at about $250 |
Is the wheelskins boot a universal fit boot or is it made just for the 944? seems like it would need to be specifically for it or the chances of it fitting correctly aren't very good.
How well does the renn bay boot fit? seems reasonably priced? How well do the pelican boots fit? seemed like I had found complaints in the past about the fitment of the pelican one. Any other options out there? |
i've done two of these in the past 4 months - after getting the leather tucked in at the top it is very difficult to coax the plastic cap on - i had a spare cap (in case i broke the one i was working on ) and in a fit of frustration i slammed it down HARD on a thick piece of newspaper on the kitchen table - well i was surprised the cap didn't crack and in fact had been pressed most of the way into the shift lever - a few more good whacks and it was all the way in - i used the same method with the second one - same results - so now if i ever have to do it again that will be my preferred method

Nice! I love the look of those boots. I got a leather boot for 5 bucks at a swap meet to go on my 924. Doesn't look as good as yours, though...
|
Ernie, have you bought or dealt with the pelican knob and boot? Are they pretty good quality? I am looking for some insight on what to get and everyone is telling their story about doing their repair but none say which one they used.

Both boots are shot and the pin is worn and the shifter makes a grating noise at times. |

Does the pelican part include the shifter lever? I haven"t been able to separate the boot from the lever. There doesn't appear to be any way to do it. Any advice?
