Emissions or Safety Inspections in MA?
I'll be moving from Denver to Salem, MA in a couple weeks and I can't figure out if I have to get emissions done like I have to in the great state of CO... Its running rich, but no smoke, can pass the safety inspection, but has trouble passing emissions in Denver. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

in some areas of MA, it is quite strict - basically, if you live in a large city, it's tough, but if you live in the outlying areas, it's not
this is the way the new laws work - it is governed state by state as to how they implement the new federal standards, but due to the bi-annual federal testing of air quality, each area must maintain a certain air quality - if they fail, then they must implement the strict testing - some states do this by zip code - some by county - i believe MA is by county |

Even if you don't pass, if your repair bill will cost too much (based of m.y.) you can apply for an exemption. Or you can just move over the border to NH where only the cars with ODB II are tested.

its a good thing your not moving to CT . they don't care if your wheels fall off with no yearly safety inspection as long as your car burns clean to pass our every two year emissions testing then its all good !

I really appreciate all the information you guys have on this stuff because I spent tons of time trying to figure it out and couldn't find anything in all the b.s.
And I'll be in essex county, so hopefully Ben Franklin can encourage the inspector to let a Porsche slide. Lol

Here you go! This is from the states website...(5 min search ...
) "The following types of motor vehicles are exempt from the emissions inspection: Cars, trucks and SUVs manufactured before model year 1997 no longer receive tailpipe emissions tests but fail their safety inspections if they produce visible smoke. Light duty diesel vehicles (weighing less than 8, 500 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, or “GWVR”) that were either manufactured before model year 1997 or are 15 or more model years old Medium duty diesel vehicles (up to 10,000 pounds GVWR) that were either manufactured before model year 2007 or are 15 or more model years old Medium duty non-diesel vehicles either manufactured before model year 2008 or 15 or more model years old; New vehicles delivered to Massachusetts owners Motorcycles and mopeds Tactical military vehicles Vehicle operated exclusively by electric power" Massachusetts Vehicle Check I live in MA , I seriously doubt you'll have an issue with your 84. And on that note shoot me a PM when you get here, I'm trying to organize a Spring "fun" run in the middle part of the state with a group of local New Englanders. Welcome to "taxachusetts" !!

All I have to do then is fix the non existant horn and replace the $65 parking brake...
As for the fun run, I've barreled my old 924s through Worchester all the way to Southbridge when I was in college, so it'd be great to see all the places I've sped past a couple years ago.
