over heating

Still woking out the bugs on a 968 motor swap on an 87 951. My latest finding is it that the temp spikes when driving in city traffic. I took my 951 out for a drive yesterday and all was good on the highway and country roads alike. The needle stayed around the first hash mark. When I hit some traffic lightsi noticed that the needle went almost to the red. It has never done this before. I turned on the A/C fans and the temp went down, like it's supposed to. When i got home I checked it out and did some easy checks.

The fans come on when the A/C switch is depressed.
The fans do not come on when the temp spikes. i got nervous when the needle hit the red and I turned the fans on again with the A/C.

Bad thermo switch or bad relay?

Already done. There is no air in system. Good thought though.

New rad, new hoses, newer water pump. Old switch and relays. I don't mind replacing but i am curious as to what is the cause of the problem.

...likely the temp switch on the rad...swap it and match it to a new thermostat, and it should work.

Also...how's the tension on your timing belt? Been re-tensioned as required? It may be slipping on the waterpump pulley. Might be worth a look.

Thanks. I will triy to get it done in the next couple weeks. I still have to retension belts and fix a leaking steering line. The fun never ends!:
