Clutch Install
Some time ago I thought I read some one used vasoline as a lube for their T/O Bearing, is this good? I was going to use white lithium.

seems to me like Vaseline would have too low a melting point.

sex lube
moly di for the throwout bearing. You use vaseline, KY, or similar lubricant to rebuild the torque tube. Vaseline also good for battery terminals. There are other uses...but they are not really on subject with Porsche repair,

Rigth ,but also can be use on your spark plugs treads ,just a touch of vaseline on the treads will not only ease installation but also removal, been using it for years not only on my Porsches but also on my two DD & it work just fine.If there others use for it why not the plugs.

lubrication
Earnie: vas on spark plug threads? hmmmmm....well,,, better than nothing i guess and whatever floats you boat. I would mix a touch of molly in there myself.
Dan: I would go with Molly. It is available in little packets at the counter. sometimes called Anti sieze. If your parts store doesn't carry it. They are wussy, nambsy pambsie girly girls and you should get your parts from manly men. IOW go to a real parts store. If they say you have to special order a pint jar or larger....they are MORONS, run away.

Oh ok I've seen that, anti sieze. I read some where online that they would use white lithium for the spline.
PS I use vasoline on my wifes muffler bearing and plunger, no complaints so far.

difference
in case of excessive heat...white lithium drys out and gums up. anti sieze forms a slippery ash. put a drop of each on an ex manifold and see for yourself. it is really a fine point. I use AS on the throwout bearing yoke / collar and pivot. check for what Clarks says on the matter and go with that.

DAN! i was crucified here on Pelican couple of years ago for using Vaseline in our cars.
Vaseline was said to be petrol jelly and therefore easy to take on fire!!! I had been using it for at least 55 years in all electrical wirings and contacts and had to eat up that experience. Now i use dielectric grease- 20 times more expensive or so but i have ease in my heart excepting better knowledge here. I think you should use the appropriate grease for each item in your Porsche and you could find it in the workshop manuals for it. So do not use Vaseline under any circum-stances to be safe. Just a little hint for lubricate your spark plugs, use copper paste on the threads which is wery good. Good luck ![]() _____________________________________ Lapponia 944 NA 1984 |

picking nits
Oh relax guys....vaseline is fine on contacts if you don't have any dielectric (silicone) grease around. It is just that dielectric grease is "better" and again, it can be purchased in those little packets by the counter. throw a couple in the toolbox and you have it when you need it. The copper stuff is great as well. vaseline CAN be used on exhaust clamps and such. It smokes away and the nuts and bolts sit on the rust and fuse themselves together. I even know an old school mechanic that used to sand down mating ex pipes so that they would "rust and seal". use what you have to do the best you can. Take it from a man awaiting a special order of two part etching epoxy primer to be use as a base for urethane primer. Any guesses as to what I am up to? These consumables are a bit pricey and subject to personal preferences, with one person swearing that brand X blue is the best thing for dangling participles and adult onset acne. What ever!
but seriously...anti sieze on the clutch yolk and pivot. I even seal the pivot bearings after repacking them with a "special blend" YMMV, and I admit I am at the lunatic fringe side of obsessive mechanic. But THIS far in? who can say you are being over cautious. Careful setting the clearance on the throwout bearing.

Vaseline was said to be petrol jelly and therefore easy to take on fire!!! Since I'm not a person who will take things sitting down.Just imagine this scenario .A men standing outside at the corner of his garage (since I didn't want to blow up my belove 968 during the experience ) surrounded by 4' to 6' snow banks, wearing a heavy coat ,glove & a welder shield, holding in one hand a small s/s container containing a big glob of petroleum jelly(vaseline) & a propane torch in the other hand ,after heating the darn stuff for five minutes ,result NO FIRE-NO EXPLOSION-nothing but melted vaseline ,lol glad those snow banks hide me from the neighbors.Note container is scrap ,kapput, vaseline is doing fine.
