hard start
 

Again sorry if this was covered before as I am new here, my 1983 944 N/A is hard to start in any condition. The problem is fuel and if I turn the key on many times before trying to start it works fine. If I try to just get in and crank it up it will crank for a long time. Seems to me that it is losing fuel pressure as it sits and until I build the pressure up it just cranks over. I plan to check the standing fuel pressure this Sunday [ my only free day] I feel I will find the pressure drop off. I do not think it is leaky injectors as that would cause a rich flooded start, this is not the case but the opposite. Anyone run into this before? any ideas? Again as always thank you very much Alan

You have 2 pressure regulators on the fuel line at the rear of the engine. Somone posted somewere that if you remove the vacume hoses and see/small gass then it is faulty.

How does the car run once you do get it started?

a little history on the car would help like:
I bought it like that?
It's allways had the problem?
It started getting worse?
MY gas milage is worse now?

Check and clean you batter conections and the ground thats next to it.. there is also another ground that is at the Rear of the engine were there there is another ground that attaches to the Chasis then the bellhousing. Pretty much righ dead centor of the rear of the vechile it is a steel braided wire kinda like the one on the batter Negative post

Some history on this car, it's my 2nd 83 844, the first i sold 6 years ago, this one I got with broken belts and bent valves. I got it running a month ago and this problem was there then probably from last owner I have no way to know for sure. The car came with a good used head so I used it, and the motor runs perfect but takes some cranking to start unless I pre pressureize the fuel system or a little starting fluid then it fires right away. I am sure its the lack of fuel on startup. The gas mileage I have not checked as far as per gallon but it is real good not a rich condition what so ever. Better than my 03 Hyundai Accent. I will check the fuel regulators as well, I do know that the fuel pump runs as soon as the key is turned on [I can hear it] The car goes like hell with no stumble or hesitation. Thanx again Alan

Any progress yet?

Last nite when I got home from work I went to start my 944 and it started at first turn of the key unlike every other time. I am going to look into maybe one or both of the fuel regulators my not be sealing and maybe letting the pressure go back to the tank once the car is shut down. I checked to see if they were leaking into the vacum lines but they were not besides this would give a flooded start which is not the case with this car. Also it would run rich and crappy which it does not. Thank you and I will keep you posted. Alan

The fuel pump relay is fine as the fuel pump runs as the key is turned on and i hear the pump run as i crank the motor over. Again tonite when i went to start the car it fired rite up as it's supposed to. I did some running around in my other car and when i got home, i restarted my 944 and again fired rite up, it must have fixed itself LOL we will see and i will keep you all posted if it does it again, I still think that maybe the pintle in the fuel regulator may have been stuck or maybe some dirt??? As for now there is no telling. Alan:confused:
