Camshaft Seal?

There was a link that i can no longer find that showed you how to replace the Front cam seal and then a little more like the big oring and the little oring plug after removing the camshaft bolt.

Are you supposed to use Loctie 574 To seal it when you tigthen the bolts up? My original cam had some what looked like 574 and the spare i took apart had gobs and gobs of it

I've never used it, and never had any problems. But I HAVE seen some pretty graphic images of keyway damage from it coming loose. Replacing the seal is very straight-forward.

So i guess everyone instals the Large oring and small little seal Dry with good results? I took apart a second cam and it has some type of loctite 574 on it. none of the sources like clarks garage Mentioned it and 2 out of my 4 cam housings did have it. the 3rd had some white case sealant and the other was dry with no sealant. I don't wana have to do this again for a long time so i want to do it right or do it they way others have had no problems with. Could not find it in the Shop manual either.

Being an a/c guy, I could never install o-rings dry. I use what I have around, which is usually PAG 46.

I agree the shop manual says to lubricate lightly . But the yellow lactate 574 type sealant is throwing me off. I see it's purpose just want to make sue I can do without it or if it really is factory

John_az any input or linky linky. I remember back in the day when there were lots of engine builders with answers to these questions. I miss those days.

Just waiting on the word and I can slap it together

The factory manual does not specify any sealant there. Just a light coat of oil on the rubber parts before installation. You could use a little curil-T on the o-rings if you are really worried, but as long as the surfaces are not damaged, it will be fine with just oil. No rubber seal or o-ring should ever be installed totally dry, since it will roll, pinch, tear, or something else bad. Seems like using 574 there just makes a mess, but I guess it could be a second line of defense.

I have been using that curil-t on everything. Every font engine seal, water pump, Rear cork camshaft housing but it did make the cork seal squeeze out a little and took it off to double check if it sealed correctly still and it did.

I've been putting CRC assembly lube for all my o-rings, but 50wt oil on metal to seal contact like cam and balance shaft seals.

The sealant on both virgin camshaft housings had the 574 and looked like it made an extra leak proof seal and i guess the 574 was used as a lubricant to help with instalation.

Maybe this was only done to the early model 944 as both of the cam housings with the sealant were from an 83, well at least one of them as it came from my car.
