winsheild washers do not work
A few weeks ago, my speedo stopped working, so I took apart the steering coulomb, so I could take the speedo, tach and miscellaneous guages out to take a look at the speedo cable (broken) and replaced it. A few days later I go to turn on my wipers and they didn't work. Took a look at the fuse and it was broken. put in a new fuse, turned on the wipers, and the fuse blew right away. What could be the cause to this? Could a bad relay cause the fuse to blow, or do I really have a wire touching the wiper wiring somewhere? Any help or comments would be great. We are have rain the next 10 days or more according to 10 day forecast, and also my inspection is due this month (cant pass with non-working wipers).

If you ask me I'll say there is a short inside the column at the wiper switch (if your blowing fuses),I know they are a PITA to take out (don't ask me why I know) but maybe you should remove the stalk & make sure.GL

Either a bottle of windex at close reach (roll down window. Spray windsheild while dodging children in a school zone then turn on wipers....... saw that on the road once) or your going back in. What are re chances its not somethin you caused? Slim from experience.

Disconnect wiper motor from wiper arms, straighten out wire coat hanger, attach to wiper arm and go for it!
Just noticed that your sig. did not show up in your last post, at least not on my 'puter, and do you still have all the cars? You stated that you took apart steer. col. to remove gauges? I am not sure abt. early model 944's, but on my cars, I no longer remove my steering wheel to get to gauge cluster. Just need to maneuver and gently persuade. |
Sorry guys, I meant the wipers don't work, and am sure the washer sprayers don't work either, but no fluid in tank. Really need my wipers working with all the rain for the next bunch of days ( and more important- inspection)
How would I check the stalk for a short? I put a 16A (red) fuse in to see if it would blow too, and it did right away. |
I agree that you will prob. have to go back into the column. Fuses blowing are an almost certain sign of a short.
|
Just go back in. Should be easy to spot damage.

I agree that you may have to go back into column. Blowing fuses are a sure sign there is a short. May have cut the insulation on a wire, or some other kind of metal to metal grounding.
Sorry for extra post, posts are showing up slowly. |
Fixed! Pulled my old switch from my parts bag from my 924s (engine fire about 5 years ago) and wipers and sprayers motor work now. Knew I should of keep some of those parts, but now bag is getting slim. Thanks fellas.
P.s. My signature doesn't show up when I use my phone. I'm working on my current car, '84 944. Sorry. |
i don't even have a a windshield washer, Removed it to save weight :P. I do wish i have had it sometimes but i wash my car once a week so it has not been a problem so far
|
Why even run a windsheild. Some sun glasses should suffice. Lol. Just kidding :)

RainX... Lots and lots of RainX....
Seriously, that was what you did with my Corrado, the factory wipers SUCKED. Or you could move to OK, we haven't gotten any rain to speak of in months... |
No windshield = bad mpg. Owners manuel says not not add any kinda stuff to the winshield. I did add it and rain-x does work but it glares bad at night. I think it's a German car thing. American cars seem to like it

Did you use the stuff you wipe on and wipe off?
I've had it on my 944, my Corrado, and my moms M3 without issue.... |
