Best 944 NA upgrade possible under $500?
Hello all,
just would like some recommendations on either a performance, or exterior/ aesthetic upgrade under $500 that would make an astounding improvement overall depending on which department it falls under. Thanks a bunch!!! Cheers, Drew |
$500 worth of summer tires
|
Already taken care of! :)

Drivers school / track day
|
New throttle cam!
|
Would that just improve response or do more then that?
|
Koni's.
|
after tires, koni's.
after koni's....w/o sacrificing ride comfort....50shot of nitrous. |
Simple a good tune up,new wires Bosche OE/spark plugs(the rigth one for your car)dist cap & rotor.then a MSD Blaster coil, short shifter & throttle cam (doesn't do anything power wise but nice respond)LOL do we have any money left.:D if so s/s brakes lines.

This will vastly improve the 944 and everything else you drive for the rest of your life. |
Here is how to spend the first $500 ---take your pick...
After you have these done go for the upgrades. Porsche Doc is a pro mechanic and does this for a living. 944 HP Questions/Answers - Porsche Forum - Porsche Enthusiast Forums GL John |
Definitely track time. After that I'd say freshen up the suspension and brakes.
|
If you are doing the work (DIY) then Turbo/Brembo brakes all around - great improvement to a NA car.
Used MAF system with chip - these though, for a Na car, are hard to find used, but a great upgrade. Timing/balance shaft belts and rollers when due can be done DIY for under $500 $500.00 worth of stereo - wow. |
Put bulbs/sockets in the empty locations on the rear tail lights. If you have done tires, brakes and Koni's, put bigger sway bars F&R from a 951. Modify your stock throttle cam.

if you do a clutch job put on a fidanza AL flywheel(more power on rear axle, faster revs)
or try to get front and rear hub/brakes from a turbo or S2 depends of your offset or put a rear stabilizer bar(if you not have it),new shoks, tires, or put the money apart for next maintenence and put new OEM parts like fuel dampers, presure regulator,O2 sensor, rubber intake hose..... |
Depending on year of car...the Miller Performance MAF kit...do a search. $399 with chips, etc.
Dyno gains 10% HP and TQ. ...oh, and +1 to others that have quoted...:D |
Seat time...I agree is the best. If you are going to that anyway. Everything depends on how you want to drive and what you are after. For me it was autocross and Time Trials. Here is what I did.
Race seat and harness: Its interesting how well you can work on actually driving, when you are held securely in a good fitting seat. I got a used set for $200 total. Suspension: Upgrade your sway bars. A used turbo bar can be had for $100 or so. Konis or Bilstein Sports are great upgrades. From there, a coil over set up for the front with better springs. I picked up a use ground control set up with #350 springs for $120. Or the Weltmeister #250's which fit in the stock perches. I sold mine for $75. Bigger Torsion bars, you can get Porsche specific or locate a good VW supply...the Super Beetle torsion bar is the same fitment as a 944 at half the price. I have done nothing at all to the engine to modify it. I was at Chuckwalla Raceway last weekend at a Time Trial. Its so satisfying to get a point by from folks in cars with 100+ more HP. :-) |
Buy a POS 944 for $500 and gut it of everything. A 2400 lb 944 would be a blast.
