Waste gate installation secret ?
Finally putting the finishing touches on the clutch job. I've run into problem getting the wastegate bracket on the torque tube lined up and the wastegate installed.
I wish I had put a witness mark on the bracket when I removed it. I have the W/G inlet and outlet pipes attached and really have no problem fitting the whole unit into the exhaust pipes. When I get the bolts lined up on the body of the W/g , I can't get the bolt on the back side of the bracket lined up and vise versa. After about 3 1/2 hours messing with it I gave up on it for the weekend. Is there some secret combination of cuss words, min number of beers, prayers, BFH?? I'm getting frustrated. Stopping the rant now :} The job thus far has not really been all that bad. Most problems I had were created by myself (ouch) like not marking that dang bracket... Thanks for listening Bruce

Did you take off or loosen the bracket from the torque tube? You do know it comes off in two pieces and so is fully adjustable?

Mike,
When I took it off, I removed the whole exhaust sys releasing from the down pipe and xpipe flanges and the 2 W/G body bracket hex bolts and the bolt on the back side of the bracket. This released the WG from the bracket. Dropped it all and then removed the W/G bracket from the Torque tube by splitting the clamp around the TT. When I reinstalled the exhaust , I installed the xpipe, the cat back pipe on its hangers and now am left with the W/g and its pipes. I know you can move the bracket around the TT to adj the postion of the bracket up/down but I cant seem to get all three of the removed bolts to line up at the same time. I'm thinking my next attempt will be to attach the 1/2 bracket to the wg and then hold it to the TT to get a witness mark. Then remove from wg and attach the bracket back to the TT in the marked orientation and hope all lines up. I don't see a way to tighten or adjust the bracket once the wg is in its correct position. I know this is hard to follow in writing. If you look at the PET its #32 bolt that attaches to the back of the bracket and the 2 wg body hex bolts on the bracket ( not really discernible on the Pet pic) Thanks for trying to help.

Mine is laying in pieces beneath the car - I just installed a new engine.
I've got the engine in, bolted to the torque tube and the crossmember and suspension in. I'll go out there in a little bit and see if I can install my wastegate.

Ha!
I got out there yesterday, figuring to get at it, and found that the cycling valve on the new engine was broken when we removed the engine - and I hadn't noticed. So instead of installing the wastegate, I ended up pulling the intake manifold and re-did all the vacuum hoses (did a venturi delete) as well as installing the new cycling valve (with the missing line to the wastegate). I was pretty upset that I hadn't though to check it when the engine was out... D'Oh! It's still apart. I hope to get back to it this week. You've got an 88 - does your wastegate have the cast iron bracket with the one bolt in addition to the bracket that fits onto the torque tube? The 87 I pulled apart did. I forget what it bolted to. When my kid did his clutch (in his 86 951), he didn't have any problem with it - but the 86 just has the one bracket going to the torque tube.

UPDATE
Mike, Sorry to hear about your setback. I've had a few of those doing the clutch--most of then self induced or waiting for parts.I went in w/fresh eyes today and no frustration. I decided that I would install the bracket on the w/g and put it in the pipes to mark the position of the clamp on the TT. I had installed the starter and heat shield, once I removed it I discovered that I could leave it all hooked up and install the other side of the clamp and was done!! To answer your question, yes mine had the cast iron bracket attached to the body of the w/g with 2 allen head bolts. This bracket attaches to the clamp over the TT with one bolt that goes into the clamp. The clamp is held by 2 bolts that have the nuts tacked to the clamp (one of mine had come loose and that caused some extra work getting a wrench on that nut). If yours is like mine, install the allen heads to the w/g , install the w/g( with the inlet and outlet pipes) into the exhaust flanges and line up the 1/2 of the clamp to the TT. While pressing that part up to the TT, install the other 1/2 around the TT and hand tighten the clamping bolts. Install the back bolt that goes through the cast iron bracket. I used a flex head rachet but don't really remember if it was necessary. It wasn't very hard once I removed the starter had the clamp part installed to the W/g. Hope all this makes sense to you. GL Bruce

Hey, thanks for the description.
Yeah, sometimes just taking a break can help.
