Timing belt tension...one spot to adjust?

1987 944na. I have the timing belt back on, and let the spring tensioner do its thing. Based on everything I have read I am not trusting the spring tensioner; however it appears there is no other device (other roller etc.) that can be used to adjust the tension. My assumption is that if I need to adjust that tension, I need to somehow manipulate the spring tensioner to put either more or less tension.

Is this correct or am I missing something? I do have the pin wrench which allows me to rock the spring tensioner back and forth.

Thanks in advance.

If you rely on the spring tensioner and follow the WSM procedure, your belt will be over tightened.

The WSM procedure states:
Crank engine 2 or 4 revolutions CW until at TDC----(stop)
Loosen nuts A & B and gently (my words--do not let slap) rock the mechanical tension pully (to remove stagnent spring tension) and place on the cam belt.
Tighten nuts A&B--(never turn crank with A&B loose!)

Now rotate the crank CW 2 or 4 revolutions and check again.

I can tell you by experience your belt will be too tight.

The only way the mechanical spring tensioner will get close to accurate tension is to do this on the first step.

Rotate the engine 2 or 4 times CW clockwise---stop at TDC!
Now rotate the crank 5 to 7 degrees CCW--about 1/2 cam gear tooth

Now loosen the mechanical self tensioner nuts A&B and gently place the roller on the cam belt.

Tighten the A&B nuts...Rotate 2 or 4 revolutions CW and now test the tension.

HOW???
Glad you asked...
The "Waterpump Pully Test"

If you still are not sure, go to clarks and look at the 90 degree twist method or buy the Arnnworx tools.

No matter what method you use, retest the tension after 500 to 700 miles on a new belt ----the cogs settle in the pully grooves. or 1000 to 12000miles on a used belt.
