Anyone in Boston area want to assist with no start?
Hello to all,
I posted this back about a month ago and quite honestly haven't had much time to work on my car. If anyone has a little more technical know-how than I do and was in the Boston area and would be willing to assist me diagnose a no-start problem with my '87 944 N/A I would be extremely grateful. Here is a copy of my last posting for all the details. Since I posted I replaced the DME Relay, fuel filter, and fuel pump. It's now sitting in my garage with a nice set of D90 wheels I bought but can't go anywhere ![]() Thanks in advance. ------------------------ Hello to all. I have a '87 944 N/A 5speed that recently died while running errands this past weekend and need some advice. I was pulling out of Target and it stalled and would not start. It turned over fine but would not run so I had it flatbedded home. Here are some essential notes that may help to diagnose: -Purchased car October 2010 w/140k (one owner) -Replaced belts/rollers/all fluids -Replaces spark plugs -Have filled almost empty gas tank w/93 Prem fuel -Has been running perfectly for 1 week since replacing all belts and rollers. Put on approx 175 mi. -Battery is showing roughly 14 volts. Has been on Battery Tender since Oct. Battery is 1 yr old. Initially, after doing belts and rollers, I forgot to plug in Air Flow Meter plug so car would start and then die. This symtpom now is different where car will not actually start; it will just crank (with oil pressure showing OK). Any thoughts? I checked AFM plug, reference sensor, spark plugs, distr cap, all to no avail. ICV? DME? Thanks! You all were extremely helpful in diagnosing my last issue. |

My 83 na died just like yours did. I had no spark to the plugs but had spark to the coil. Turned out to be a reference sensor.

I have a tach bounce when I turn the car over. I'll check those sensors just to be safe. Thanks!

It could be a bad DME.

Where abouts are you? I might be able to lend a hand.
Have you checked the fuel pump? Do you have pressure at the front of the rail? |

I am located 15 mins North of Boston. I have replaced the fuel pump but am not technically savvy enough to check for pressure at the fuel rail. Is there a fairly straightforward way to do this?

Yes, there's a procedure on Clarks - essentially you undo the nut on the front of the fuel rail (don't lose the ball bearing that's in there and don't do it while the system is under pressure) and then run the pump (jumper the DME relay) and collect the quantity of fuel over a known time interval to make sure you're flowing adequate fuel (forget the exact numbers offhand).
Other possibility includes the injectors which can be tested the same way. Keep it simple - fuel, air, spark. Make sure you're getting all of them.

I pass through Reading daily on my way home from work and would be happy to take a look. I'll be traveling through Monday but can take a look after that. See PM for email and phone.

I am also from the area. I am in Boston almost every day. I can come up 93 instead of my usual way home as well.

IT was kind of by accident but what got me thinking is that the DME has to see both a speed and reference signal in order to allow the motor to start. It was seeing the speed signal but it appears that the reference signal was not being seen. I was checking the Ohms of the speed and reference sensors and the reference sensor plug looked to not be completely engaged. I cleaned the contacts verified that the sensors were within spec put it back together again and it started rite up.

Good news / bad news guys. Car starts but.immediately sputters and then dies. Drove ok last night but would buck and loss power when acellerator is pressed when driving. Now it won't stay running.
Any ideas? |
