Porsche newbie!
I recently purchased a 1984 Porsche 944. I thought I was getting a good deal on
it because it was pretty cheap and it didn't have any major problems, although it did have a lot of small problems. But since this is my first Porsche I was amazed at how much these "small problems" would cost me! I was looking for a sun roof switch and a rear hatch switch for starters but as you probably know, they are VERY hard to find and if you do find them they cost thousands of dollars (minor sarcasm). I was wondering if any of you veterans could point me to a web site that sells them cheaper or if any of you have any spare switches you could sell me? Also any advise a newbie like me needs to know would be great! Thank you! |

Clean the contacts of the rear hatch switch by dismantling it very carefully(tiny parts inside and you need to see how it goes back together) and use either electrical contact cleaner spray or a pencil eraser. That will save you at least a million dollars to buy a new switch.

Welcome Kamron! We can help better with future posts if you add your car to your signature line. As for parts, do you live near any junkyards? If you are lucky enough you can find LOTS of 944 treasures at the right place. If not, try posting what you need as I believe there are lots of Pelicanites that DO go to junkyards frequently. May even try the for sale portion of this website.
Good luck!

I've had some luck with parts on craigslist, as lots of these cars (particularly early ones) are getting turned into 994 Cup cars and the like. Posting in the parts wanted section here will usually turn up what you want. Welcome to Porsche ownership, and to this forum. There are some really helpful and knowledgeable folks here.

There are so many things that can cause performance or handling issues in these cars. If you have some basic (or advanced) mechanical skills, research your issue on this website and it won't be long before your fellow 944 owners will jump into the boat with you and provide you with a wealth of knowledge on how and where to help you fight your "demons". These are great "therapy" cars. Fun to solve the puzzle and a real school house in teaching you the intracies of your car. Some of it's going to be a hundred here, a hundred there but when it's right, it's a joy to drive. I'm on my 3rd and still hooked.

Yep, not hard cars to fix once you learn them. Just got through my 4th cambelt job yesterday and it felt like nothing. The pelican classifieds cobmined with getting to know people here is a lifesaver for keeping these cars on the road without spending a fortune for every stupid little thing. There's lots of good used parts out there for pretty cheap.
They're great cars once sorted, and pretty dead reliable when taken care of. I've been daily driving mine for 5 years/90K miles with relatively few troubles and expense compared to what one might think.
