Found a frwilk Chiped DME, how to install
OK so im pretty excited right now. Its an early dme With the dual chip adaptor board and already has the toggle switched installed so its good to go.
Question is will it just be a plug and play? the page on his site is gone so I don't have instructions for the instalation. Do i have to jumper the altitude sensor? or is that just for late cars. anybody know of another connection in the vehicle that i could cutt off a junk car to make a jumper? I just want to install it already, but i want to do it right |
i think is plug and play because altitude sensor works on very high altitude difference....
please when you put it and drive it send me you opinion(if you don't want to forum it give me a messege) |
It is the same as your 83 DME, physically. It is just the memory chip that has changed and the programming inside.
or you can contact them at frwilk@PowerPROM.com |
If it is the dme with performance mode and toggle for regular mode just make sure that you don't switch the toggle when the car is running. It does not like that and will shut down and you will have to let the car sit for a short while before it will fire up again. I installed this in my 83 and liked it very much.

Yes it has the toggle, I was going to crak itvopen again and post pics, I opened it at the junk yard to check. It does have a toggle. Ibwas thinking of turning car off in between switching modes. How do I know which mode I am in?
Going to open it and clean it up a bit |
If there is no tag on the dme itself. I would just try it one way and see if the car acts the same as your stock dme acts or if you feel a small amount of extra pep out of that motor. You will know for sure then.
|
Surely you'll be able to tell which mode you're in. If you can't, I'd say it isn't really an upgrade!

Pictures to be posted soon, there was writing with a white pen on the outside I'll let u guys decipher it but from what I gather it's an 85 early dme with 6k rpm limit
|
6500 or 7000. There were only two versions
|
if it has a toggle, then you probably don't need to jumper the high altitude sensor.
The jumper is to fool the DME into switching to the high altitude fuel map, which has been replaced with the FRWilk chip |

You can read the serial number, SN120. If you send that to FR, he can probably tell you all the specs on it. This is off a wrecked car?
On mine, switch forward toward the engine is the performance chip. |
Yup off a wrecked car an auto on top of that. No physical damage tbelts were intact front sway bar was bent upwards to the frame maybe while the forklift moved it. And the rear passengers side stub axle had crazy among of play.
I honk I figured out the switch just put the dme in and recede the engine, turned off flicked the switch and recede it again it seemed quicker now I'm going to test drive |
Ok back from the drive, didn't really notice a difference honestly. Maybe one does need to jumper the altitude sensor, I do have a lightened flywheel and that pretty much eliminated the dead spots I had before. Half a tank of 91 too. I think the idle is higher once I push the switch tirades the engine. *sigh*
|
i didn't notice any more power, it just moved the torque curve around, in that the dead spot between 2,500 & 3,000 RPM is gone
