Belt noise

Okay, I noticed that my car is squealing. All I could think of is that it's a belt. What do you think could be causing this? Maybe a belt is loose? It's an 88 Porsche 944 turbo s.

Check the power steering and/or the alternator/AC belt. They both have adjusting struts where they can be...ummm...adjusted.

Good luck,

GHEN

On startup or all the time? Mine squealed upon startup for a few seconds after a new belt install. The ac alt belt can be adjusted very easily. Obviously there should be some deflection in the belt. IIRC it was about 3/8 or so. Someone will correct me if I am wrong. I adjusted my slowly over the course of a week a little at a time until the squeak went away. You also want to make sure your compressor bolts are tight. A loose compressor bolt will cause a belt to get loose. Check your compressor bolts before you adjust your belt.

. . .and don't forget to loosen the adjusting rod attachment bolts a hair BEFORE trying to turn the rod.

6 rib a/c /alt. belt must be very tight you need to use factory belt tension gauge 9201 same tool to check balance shaft belt tension. the a/c belt should be tightend to 9.5 scale units on 9201 gauge then turn adjuster (10mm) one full complete turn more. that is porsche service manual procedure. you can not check it by the thumb deflection method. make sure you have the two 10mm bolts one at each end of the adjuster bar loose when you tighten belt so it will not be under bind and the front and rear a/c bracket bolt loose also 10mm bolt on front and 8mm bolt on rear of a/c compressor. do not forget to tighten them when you are done.

It's only on startup. Once I get up to speed it goes away... And it isn't a new belt. And luftman, where is that belt located?

Really? That seems like overkill. I wonder how many people use this method.
