I recently acquired a very mint 1983 944 within the past few months. I have been shuffling through countless of forums and discussions, articles, everything about 944s and related modifications. Still, some questions specific to my car remain unanswered.
First off, I plan on using my car as a daily driver for a long time. I am rather young, so obviously the styles and modifications I want may not sit well with others in taste, but to each his own... I wanted to lower the car another few inches. I've gathered that I need to purchase coilovers for the front end, and can reindex the torsion bar in the rear? Is this correct? Are there any specific brands anyone knows of? I wanted to do the front bumper conversion to a turbo bumper. Would I be able to buy a standard 944 T bumper, and the necessary bumper support and fog lights? Do I need to purchase a conversion kit? I know I need to slightly cut the fender, but do I need to replace anything aside from the bumper (obviously) and the support? I apologize if such things have been answered. I have extensively searched these forums as well as others, and I just can't seem to find clear enough answers. |

there are multiple ways of doing both. lowering can be done as simple as changing the spring in front to a lower rating, but a coilover kit is the best way. the rear torsion bar can be reindexed or changed out.
as far as switching to a turbo front end, the best way to do so would be to buy the bumper and both front panels and switch all 3 for a seamless change over.

Front: Weltmeister springs 200# 1.25in lower
Rear: Set eccentric to lowest setting (about 0.75in lower) This will give your 83 a higher rating spring and a good height/stance. 944's work best when they are level or slightly higher at the rear which this would provide. Stay away from coilovers for a daily driver, expensive and no real benefit. Coilovers are good on tracked cars when you need to corner balance accurately, no real benefit on the street. For the turbo front conversion you can by the fake turbo front which will fit without other mods but IMO it doesn't look as good as the real thing. To fit the actual turbo front you need: Bumper Bumper brace (part behind the bumper) Both fenders Header panel (part between the headlights) Light covers Light pods (the plastic part) Set of turbo bumper lights |
